Florida maintains grip on SEC all-sports title

Florida continues to be the Southeastern Conference's most successful athletic program across the board.

Five team championships helped Florida claim the Halifax Media Group's SEC All-Sports title for the 24th time since the 1987-88 school year. Florida has won eight straight overall championships, eight straight women's titles and six consecutive men's titles.

"When competing in the SEC, the teams faced are often among the nation's best," Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said on the university's website. "The Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy is something we take great pride in due to the passion and effort our coaches and student-athletes displayed during the season."

Georgia finished second in the overall standings, with Texas A&M, Alabama and Kentucky rounding out the top five. Tennessee was 11th out of the 14 schools, with Vanderbilt placing 12th.

The Gators won SEC titles in basketball, baseball, soccer and swimming, and the Lady Gators won in indoor track & field. Florida has swept the overall, men's and women's titles 14 times, with no other league member having ever accomplished that feat.

Points are awarded based on the number of competing teams in a sport, so Auburn would have received 14 points for its football championship. Only four schools compete in equestrian, so South Carolina received four points, Georgia three, Auburn two and Texas A&M 1.

A program's point total is divided by the number of teams competing in the sports the school fields, and that quotient ranks the teams in the final standings.
