Grundy County schools in session on Memorial Day

GRUNDY COUNTY, Tenn. - While most people were off for Memorial Day, some local students had to go to school. Some parents called it disrespectful to veterans and others wonder why it was scheduled that way.

Grundy County officials say several factors played into the calendar and parents have known since August. Teachers used the holiday to educate students on the meaning of the holiday. Each school held a ceremony to honor fallen service men and women. Some faculty say their days were likely more patriotic that way than they may have been if they were off.

"Normally on a traditional school year we're usually out by Memorial Day," Grundy County School Board Chairman Bob Foster said.
