Lake Johnson wins American Junior Golf Association tournament

Lake Johnson, a rising senior at Chattanooga Christian School, won his first American Junior Golf Association event and his fourth tournament of the year Monday. He won the AJGA Preseason Junior at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga., by five strokes against 69 other golfers. He shot a 5-under-par 137 with a 4-under 67 on Memorial Day. AJGA to Ringgold

The AJCA's Evitt Foundation RTC Junior Classic at WindStone will feature a handful of area players next week. The boys include Justin Hickman of Chickamauga, Davis Kirk of Dalton, Evan Spence of Ooltewah and Tyson Venable of Chattanooga. Vaughn at Springbrook

PGA of America professional David Vaughn recently accepted the position of head professional and assistant general manager at Springbrook Golf Club in Niota, Tenn. Vaughn previously was the head pro at Champions Club at Hampton Creek.

"I was looking to improve myself in the business, so I'm taking a step closer to my home area of Maryville," Vaughn said. "I remember playing Springbrook in junior events and in high school."

Vaughn said he has goals of growing the membership and increasing participation of juniors and ladies.

"The club has had a membership since the 1920s," Vaughn said. "There aren't too many places where you see three generations playing golf.

"We'll do some new junior things, some new things for women and get more involved and reach out to the community."

Women's city set

The women's city tournament will hold team play July 8 and individual match-play competition July 14-18 at Council Fire, with players 70 and older playing July 15 and 17.

Alabama advances

Alabama beat LSU 4-1 in the NCAA championship tournament match-play semifinals Tuesday at Hutchinson, Kan. The Crimson Tide will play today for the national title.

GCSAA to Congress

Leaders from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and other leaders in the golf industry met with members of Congress on the seventh annual National Golf Day on May 21 in Washington.

"National Golf Day presents a unique opportunity not only for the golf industry, but also for GCSAA and its members, to make personal connections with members of Congress and to help them understand the role the game plays in the economic, environmental and charitable life of our communities," GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said in a release.

Area aces

Jarod Mullins scored his first hole-in-one on Memorial Day at Lupton City. He aced No. 8 from 172 yards with a 9-iron. James Hughes, Danny Cavitt, Charlie Campbell and Carter Nix were witnesses.
