NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Naama Friedman of Knoxville has survived the second round of the 87th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The eighth-grader at Bearden Middle School correctly spelled “schnauzer” today and will advance to the third round of the national competition. Schnauzer is a German dog breed.
Naama is one of 281 spellers from across the United States and several foreign countries who are participating in the bee, which kicked off Tuesday at National Harbor, Md., just outside of Washington. The spelling champ will be crowned Thursday and will take home $30,000 in cash, a trophy and other prizes.
