Nathan Miller wanted to play hockey, until he realized he'd meet more girls as a figure skater.

So he shelved his hockey stick to concentrate on competitive figure skating. And he got good. So good, in fact, that his parents relocated the family from Oklahoma City to Colorado Springs to give him more opportunities. He was 13 at the time.

It was a good move on his parents' part. Today, after winning national competitions and nabbing a spot on Team USA, the 26-year-old is part of the Disney On Ice troupe, which will present "Treasure Trove" in six performances today through Sunday, Nov. 6-9, at McKenzie Arena.

"I enjoy it so much," says Miller about his professional skating career with Disney. "When I was a kid, I went to Disney On Ice and loved it. I'd watch the skaters and see them turn into these magical characters and how the audience fell in love with them. I loved how the skaters interacted with the audience, and I love that we're still doing it."

The job is demanding but fun, he says, explaining that the show travels all over the United States and to foreign countries.

"We usually have a couple days off wherever we go to perform," he says. "I get to sight-see a lot, and I love it. I love to travel. One of my passions is cooking so wherever I go, I try to eat at restaurants that focus on local fare. I watch a lot of cooking shows in my spare time."

Miller joined Disney On Ice in 2012 and hopes to stay with the organization for many years to come. His fellow skaters range in age from 18 to 42, he says.

"I want to skate as long as possible," he says, "but one day I want to go to culinary school. I'm a big fan of food. As a kid, I used to experiment and make up my own recipes. My mother wasn't a big cook, so I tried to make things myself, and I got pretty good."
