Man shot by former relative in Jackson County, Alabama

Officials are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday night in Jackson County, Ala., according to a news release from Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Edward Leon Young, 38, was shot and killed during an alleged domestic incident outside a residence on Alabama Highway 71 in Bryant, according to the release. The incident occurred between 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Harnen said the shooter is a former female relative of Young, but would not specify beyond that because it is an ongoing investigation.

Harnen also said they have not determined whether the shooting was in self defense or a homicide. No arrests or charges have been made.

Harnen said once the investigation is completed, the case will be presented to a Jackson County grand jury to determine whether there are any charges to be brought.

"We always like to run things through the grand jury, because we don't want to leave it to us to make a decision of whether there's probable cause or not," he said.

Harnen said he is not sure when the case will be brought to the grand jury because the investigation isn't complete.

He also said authorities are awaiting autopsy results.
