Second-seeded Covenant College won the USA South men's soccer tournament Saturday with a 2-0 win over fifth seed Maryville. Ian Meredith netted a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the eighth consecutive victory for Covenant (15-4-2), and Joel Friesen scored unassisted in the 88th minute. Shots were even at 13 apiece.

• Garrison Adams scored on a penalty kick late in the first half and Joey Hinshaw made eight saves as the Lee University men's soccer team won 1-0 Saturday at Emmanuel College. The host Lions outshot the Flames (8-8-2) 15-9.

• Hannah Seiner scored all three goals in the second half as Rhodes College beat Sewanee 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association women's soccer tournament semifinals Saturday at Danville, Ky. That left the Lynx 10-4-2 going into today's final and ended the Tigers' season at 12-6. Jamie Samociuk's penalty kick in the 15th minute of overtime Friday night gave Sewanee a 2-1 victory over Hendrix. Kiley Ezzell gave the Tigers (13-5) the lead on an assist by Sissy Frank in the 17th minute, but Hendrix equalized with less than eight minutes to go in regulation. Sewanee outshot the Warriors 19-10.

• The Sewanee men's soccer team fell to Centre in a 3-2 penalty-kick shootout Friday night after their scoreless tie in the SAA quarterfinals in Conway, Ark. That left the Tigers 5-10-2. Centre had margins of 22-10 in shots and 15-3 in corner kicks, but Conrad Bandoroff made eight saves for Sewanee.

• Former Girls Preparatory School standout Simone Busby of Evansville University was honored as first-team all-conference and the women's soccer goalkeeper of the year in the Missouri Valley Conference. She anchored a defense that recorded 12 shutouts and went more than 631 minutes in one stretch without allowing a goal. Her 0.58 goals-against average was the 18th best in NCAA Division I this season.

Boxing

• Chattanooga native Ryan Martin improved his professional boxing record to 9-0 in his 14-month career with a second-round TKO stoppage of Mexico's Martin Cardona in a lightweight bout Saturday in Atlantic City, N.J. The 21-year-old Martin, now living in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, has five KOs on his record.

Running

• The Dalton State women's cross country team won the Southern States Athletic Conference meet Saturday at Clinton, Miss., in the school's first-ever postseason competition as a four-year athletic program, and the Dalton State men finished second by three points to William Carey. The Lady Roadrunners were picked fourth in the preseason poll but earned co-coaches Margie Bruner and Andy Meyer the honor of co-coaches of the year in the SSAC. The five scorers for the Lady Roadrunners all were all-conference: Natalie Hensley in fifth place, Gloria Paschal sixth, Kuersten Gallivan eighth, Nayeli Jacobo 12th and Mallory Edwards 15th. Hensley and Spencer Head, who was second in the men's 8k, were the SSAC newcomers of the year. Also for the men, Paul Patterson was fourth, Brody Cook seventh, Dylan Smith 11th and Issac Pacheco 13th.

Volleyball

• Kelsey Sidney had 18 kils and Sarah Hohman had 48 assists and 13 digs in leading UNC Greensboro to a 3-1 Southern Conference volleyball victory over visiting UTC on Saturday. Kristy Wieser had 12 kills and Allie Davenport added 10 and served three aces for UTC (12-17, 5-9) in the 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 loss, while Anne Bachmann and Lauren Greenspoon had 22 and 17 assists. Melissa Green had 18 digs for the Mocs, and Briana Reid had 11 digs with seven kills. UNCG is 18-10, 10-5.

• Lee University continued its late-season surge in Gulf South Conference volleyball with a 3-0 win Saturday against visiting Union University, as Lauren Williams and Brooke Wilsman each posted eight kills and Sadie Johnson and Haley Foote had 18 and 14 assists. Johnson also served three aces in the 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 conquest for the Lady Flames (13-17, 10-10.)

• Covenant beat Meredith in the semifinals and lost to Maryville in the final of the USA South volleyball tournament Saturday in Martinsville, Va., both by 3-1 scores. In the 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17 win, Ginny Moore had 27 kills and Chelsea VanDyk had 14, while Schuyler Moore had eight kills, 30 assists, 11 digs and three aces. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 17 assists and Chloe Carlson and Christina Argaez recorded 19 and 17 digs. In the 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17 finals defeat, Ginny Moore, Cora Schroeder and Schuyler Moore had nine, eight and seven kills and Carlson had 17 digs, while Schuyler and Kirkpatrick had 16 and 15 assists. Sophia del Campo and Mary Kate White had 11 kills apiece for Maryville, which got 24 assists from Morgan Hall and 19 digs from Mallory Bonee.

• Kara Stamper had 17 kills and Rachel Mosley and Ashley Ferris added 10 and nine as Bryan College improved to 15-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Saturday with a 3-0 home win over Reinhardt. Taylor Fink had 40 assists and Madison Akins had 11 digs for the Lady Lions, who are 24-8 overall.

• Coastal Georgia, the SSAC regular-season champion, defeated Dalton State 3-0 in volleyball Saturday in Brunswick, Ga. The Lady Mariners are 29-0 overall and 18-0 in the SSAC going into the league tournament. Kianna Delaney had nine kills and Alyne Bianchi had eight for DSC (15-11, 10-8) in the 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 match, and Karly Newman made 14 digs.

Field Hockey

• Rhodes College beat Sewanee 7-1 in the SAA field hockey semifinals Saturday in Danville, Ky., lifting the Lynx to 14-3 and ending the Tigers' season at 8-8. The score was 7-0 when Sewanee's Katie Wilson scored from an assist by Kat Mulligan.

Basketball

• Second-year UTC men's basketball coach Will Wade will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
