It was early Saturday - around 4:43 a.m. - a time when there typically aren't too many cars on the road when 17-year-old Haley Howard, from Cleveland, Tenn., struck several vehicles while driving south in the northbound lanes on Dayton Pike.

Howard died at the scene.

The teen was driving a 2002 Honda Civic and sideswiped a 1995 Chevy Blazer, then hit a 2010 Nissan Versa head-on, sheriff's spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said in a news release.

The Blazer driver was uninjured, but the Nissan driver was critically injured. Atkinson said that driver was airlifted to an area hospital.

The Sheriff's Office Traffic Division is handling the investigation and more details will be released as they're announced.
