Big Five: Tennessee leads U.S. in bankruptcy filings

Despite a drop in bankruptcy filings this year, Southern states still led the nation in per capita bankruptcy filings in the first three quarters of 2014. Nationwide, there were 3.03 filings per 1,000 residents from January to September. The top states for bankruptcies were:

• 1. Tennessee, 6.31 filings per 1,000 persons

• 2. Alabama, 5.34 filings per 1,000 persons

• 3. Georgia, 5.29 filings per 1,000 persons

• 4. Indiana, 5.24 filings per 1,000 persons

• 5. Utah, 4.98 filings per 1,000 persons
