Hixson resident Ron Lane was the Super Pro class winner Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, taking the $5,000 top prize with a 4.94-second run on a 4.94 dial at 137.25 mph in his new "undercover" dragster. Lane, who sells classic cars in Soddy-Daisy, outlasted 93 cars in seven rounds of competition. Kenny Jo Dixon, a used car dealer from Calhoun, Ga., was the Super Pro runner-up with a 5.30 run on a 5.29 dial in a 1972 Camaro SS. Jason Young of Englewood was the $1,000 winner out of 52 cars in the Foot Brake class with Mel Sosebee of Fort Oglethorpe second. Tim Meissner of Powder Springs, Ga., won the 275 class with Earl Stanley of Richmond, Ky., second, and Noah Fish of Maryville was the Junior Dragster winner with Kaleb Winters second. Kevin Rodden had the low elapsed time (4.44 seconds) and top speed (154.55 mph) of the meet.

• Sewanee's Devante Jones was the Southern Athletic Association football offensive player of the week after the Tigers' 31-26 homecoming win Saturday against Berry. Jones followed a 165-yard rushing game against Millsaps with 194 yards and two touchdowns against the Vikings. He has 609 rushing yards for the season.

Basketball

• Sean Tate made 24 of 26 free throws and scored 30 points as Dalton State opened its men's basketball season Monday night with a 99-96 overtime win at Life University in Marietta, Ga. Life provided one of the Roadrunners' four losses in a 26-win inaugural season last year and took a six-point lead in the extra period before succumbing. DSC, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Division I preseason poll, got 14 points despite foul trouble from Anthony Hilliard and 13 points and nine rebounds from LaDaris Green.

• Amanda Rector scored 23 points and Angel Foster had 10 rebounds in Tennessee Temple's 109-57 women's basketball exhibition loss Monday night at Tennessee State. Samantha Palmer led the NCAA Division I Lady Tigers with 17 points.
