University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior cross country runner Amanda Cotter made the all-region team with a 19th-place finish in the NCAA South Region meet Friday at Tallahassee, Fla., and Auburn's Ty McCormack won the men's race after having worked in Chattanooga this summer and having won the Riverbend 10k in June. Cotter covered the 6-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 22.5 seconds -- a personal best by almost a minute -- for the 12th-place Mocs. Junior Rebecca Greenwall was next for UTC in 21:12.0, 72nd overall. Harry Smithers was 42nd for the UTC men in the 10k, in 31:34.40, but the Mocs didn't qualify for a team score because one of their five runners, Patrick O'Brien, dropped out with two miles to go after hyperventilating. Trevor Janssen and John Gilpin were 64th and 76th. McCormack's time was 30:08.3 for Auburn, which was third behind winner Mississippi and Florida State. Vanderbilt nipped FSU 52-53 for the women's team championship, and FSU's Colleen Quigley in 19:17.0 edged Tennessee's Chelsea Blaase for the individual victory.

Volleyball

• Sophomore Kristy Wieser had 11 kills and Allie Davenport added nine as UTC beat Wofford 3-0 in Southern Conference volleyball Friday night at Maclellan Gym. Anne Bachmann and Lauren Greenspoon had 16 and 15 assists in the 25-8, 25-21, 25-17 victory for the Mocs (13-17, 6-9), who got 14 digs and two aces from Melissa Green and seven kills from Sarah Batterton.

• Bryan College lost for the first time in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball play this season in the AAC tournament championship match Friday in Kingsport, Tenn. After defeating fourth seed Reinhardt 3-0 in the semifinals, the top-seeded Lady Lions lost 3-2 to No. 2 seed Union College.

• Dalton State is in the Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball tournament semifinals in its first year in the league, after winning 3-1 over both Brenau and Loyola (La.) in pool play Friday in Montgomery, Ala. The Lady Roadrunners' Kianna Delaney had 19 kills, Alyne Bianchi had 12 kills and 11 digs, Savannah Nelson had nine kills, Anna Metzler had eight kills with 19 digs, Karly Newman had 14 digs and Michala Askew had 44 assists in the 28-26, 19-25, 25-18, 27-25 match against Brenau, which had won 3-0 and 3-1 in their regular-season meetings. Askew had 40 assists and 19 digs in the 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14 defeat of Loyola, when Metzler had 13 kills and 19 digs, Delaney had 11 kills, Bianchi had 25 digs with eight kills, Neloson also had eight kills and Newman had 24 digs.

• Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan School had 16 kills and 13 digs and fellow senior Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High had 31 assists and nine digs as Carson-Newman beat Mars Hill 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) in the South Atlantic Conference volleyball quarterfinals Friday in Hickory, N.C. The Lady Eagles are 26-5. It was the 13th double-double of the season for Harper, who was announced this week as a first-team All-SAC player, and Pickett made the second team.

• Senior libero Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School was one of two King University volleyball players making the All-Conference Carolinas first team announced Friday. Tipton, a two-time defensive player of the year in the league, is second with 453 digs this season. She had 20 in the Tornado's 3-1 win over Limestone in the conference tournament quartefinals Friday at Due West, S.C. King plays tournament host Erskine tonight.

Soccer

• Whitworth scored in the 84th minute and edged Covenant 1-0 in an NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament game Friday in Atlanta, and that ended the Scots' sterling season at 15-5-2. Whitworth (16-1-3) plays today against Berry, which upset opening-round host Emory 2-1 in extra time. Covenant had edges of 8-6 in shots and 6-5 in corner kicks.

Basketball

• Lee University senior Cory Billingsley scored at the buzzer Friday evening to give the Flames a 49-48 season-opening win over Morehouse College in the first day of the GSC/SIAC Challenge basketball event at Carrollton, Ga. Billingsley scored 20 points and Tyquan Roberts was next with 10 for the Flames, who got nine rebounds from Cody Farley.

• Georgia State defeated Tennessee Temple 115-55 in men's basketball Friday night in Atlanta, but Bryan Jones scored 17 points and B.J. Brown had 10 in defeat for the Crusaders (2-1). Thursday at Marion, Ala., the Lady Crusaders (1-1) beat Judson 95-77 as Kristiana Purvis and Angel Foster scored 21 points apiece, Amanda Rector had 20 points with eight rebounds, four steals and five assists and Kristina Pumpure contributed eight assists and five steals with 11 points.
