Ridgeland High School football coach Mark Mariakis announced he is resigning his position after 11 seasons. Mariakis, who is in his 30th year of teaching and coaching, said he has been contemplating the move for two years and believes he is being led in a new direction.

"Sometimes God leads you in new directions and, though it's a bit scary, it's what I have to do," he said at a press conference at the school Monday morning.

Mariakis had a 72-51 record at Ridgeland, winning four region titles and advancing to the Class AAAA championship game in 2012. He was named the Best of Preps Coach of the Year after that season.
