Dalton police fired at a man who pointed a weapon at an officer Wednesday morning and subsequently arrested him, according to a police news release.

The release said an officer was driving by a townhouse apartment on Cappes Street about 8:30 a.m. when a woman on the street flagged him down and told him a fight was underway.

The officer saw a man and woman in a physical fight outside the residence. Other officers began to arrive on scene and they ordered the man, identified as Baldemar Jaramillo-Garcia, 20, to surrender.

Instead, police said Jaramillo-Garcia, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, told officers to shoot him and ran inside the house, where he pointed a BB rifle at police from an upstairs window.

An officer fired once at him, with the round hitting near the window.

Soon afterward, Jaramillo-Garcia came out of the front door uninjured and surrendered, police said.

Police said a woman and her two children, who were in the apartment, were escorted to safety and were unharmed.

Jaramillo-Garcia has been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless conduct, cruelty to children in the second degree and making terroristic threats, according to police.

By department policy, the Dalton Police Department has called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist with the investigation of the incident and the shooting.
