Hall, Murrell win inaugural Pangorge race and other sports news

Chattanoogans Cory Hall and Jason Murrell teamed to win the inaugural Pangorge Adventure Race held Saturday along the Tennesee River and on Raccoon Mountain. They completed the 40-mile paddle-run-mountain bike combination in 4 hours, 50 minutes. There were 100 competitors from six states, according to organizers for the event benefiting the Tennessee River Gorge Trust.

• Tennessee Wesleyan finished 11th out of 36 men's teams and 25th out of 38 women's entries in the NAIA cross country national meet Saturday in Lawrence, Kan., and the Dalton State women were 35th. Wesleyan's Roderick Bowman and Arnold Matuse were 37th and 42nd -- 31st and 35th in points awards -- out of 320 guys in the 8-kilometer race.

Volleyball

• After losing 3-1 and 3-0 to Samford in the regular season, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team gave the second-seeded Bulldogs a full-fledged battle Saturday in the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals at Greensboro, N.C. Samford pulled out a 3-2 win with set scores of 25-16, 28-30, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13 and takes an 18-12 record into day's semifinal round. Allie Davenport and Sarah Batterton each had 14 kills for UTC (13-19), Davenport with four aces and nine digs, while Lauren Greenspoon and Anne Bachmann set 25 and 17 assists and Melissa Green and Briana Reid had 20 and 18 digs. Reid also made three block solos along with two block assists, and Nicole Sumida and Kristy Wieser had eight and seven block assists, Sumida with one solo. Michaela Reesor had 24 kills and 15 digs for Samford, and Erika Pifer had 50 assists.

• Senior outside hitter Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan School and sophomore libero Taylor Lowe from Franklin, Tenn., represented Carson-Newman on the NCAA Division II Southeast Region volleyball all-tournament team announced Saturday night. Harper had double-digit kills in each of the Lady Eagles' tournament matches.

Baseball

• Three Cleveland State Community College baseball pitchers recently signed letters of intent to continue their careers at NCAA schools. Kegan Frederick from Sequatchie County is headed to Division I member Western Carolina, and Raunel Perez from Red Bank and Michael Dike are going to Division II at Carson-Newman and Columbus (Ga.) State, respectively. Dike is a transfer from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Georgia who had 27 strikeouts and gave up 37 hits and 26 earned runs in 29 2/3 innings last season. Perez started three games in 16 appearances in 2014 for Cleveland State, with a 3-0 record, 20 strikeouts, 20 hits and 19 earned runs in 25 1/3 innings. Frederick is a redshirt sophomore who had a 3-4 record with three saves as a freshman, when he made five starts in 17 appearances and gave up 38 hits and 24 earned runs in 38 2/3 innings, with 31 strikeouts. "All three are outstanding pitchers and young men who will be a big part of our pitching staff for the upcoming season," Cougars coach Mike Policastro said in a CSCC release.

Soccer

• Southwestern University senior goalkeeper Katherine Rodgers from Chattanooga and Baylor School was a second-team all-conference women's soccer selection for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference this year. Starting all but one game for the injury-riddled Pirates, she had a 1.58 goals-against average and a .730 save percentage with three shutouts.

Football

• UTC football coach Russ Huesman will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday, and the public is invited. Huesman will be discussing the Mocs' Southern Conference championship season and the FCS playoffs. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
