KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Police in East Tennessee say a case of road rage led one motorist to attack another with a machete along Interstate 26.

The Kingsport Times-News cited police in reporting that 56-year-old John R. Hay III is charged with attempted murder in the attack on Saturday afternoon.

Police say the victim told officers that Hay approached his vehicle from behind and flashed his headlights before passing him, making an obscene gesture and then hitting his brakes.

The victim says he pulled to the roadside, but said Hay also stopped and got out of his car with a machete. Police say the victim was injured during the confrontation, but was able to disarm Hay, who fled the scene.

Officers took Hay into custody during a traffic stop later in the day.
