When Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies and DHR representatives went to a residence Friday to check on the welfare of a minor, they found a "fairly sophisticated hydroponic indoor marijuana grow" in the home, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The residence is located at County Road 95 in the Higdon Community in Alabama. Officials called in the Jackson County Narcotics Unit to assist in the search of the home after smelling marijuana. During the search, officials found approximately 20 plants ranging from 6 inches to 4 feet tall with "impressive bud production," according to the release. They also found several pounds of drying marijuana and other growing equipment, growing chemicals and drug paraphernalia.

Paul Alan Scharwath, 46, and Tracy Lynn Scharwath, age 45, both of Higdon, were arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail without incident, according to the release. They're being charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia (felony), possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor), and chemical endangerment of a child. Bond has not yet been set.

The release stated the 14-year-old child was released by the DHR to a family member.
