A fire broke out in a commercial building in Hixson around 2 p.m. Friday, but a quick call to 911 from a neighboring company helped minimize the damage, said Mark Fritts, Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department Chief.

The fire caused $3,000 in damage to the corner of the business Lawn and Lighting, located at 7605 Hixson Pike. An employee at a neighboring business, Green Street Motor Cars, saw heavy smoke coming out of the building and called 911. Fritts said Lawn and Lighting was closed today, so they wouldn't have noticed the fire.

However, he also said the two buildings are connected, so Green Street Motor Cars was also protecting their own building.

"They're attached to it, so it's for them too," he said.

The fire was put out in under ten minutes, and the process of removing some of the structure took about two hours, Fritts said.

At this time, it's thought that the fire was electrical, as it started between two walls.

Fritts said the owners of Lawn and Lighting showed up on the scene as the fire department got there. He said they were "very surprised" by the fire, and are hiring an electrician to come inspect the wiring.
