MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A Rutherford County man accused of pointing a shotgun at two deputies is facing aggravated assault charges.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred in May. At that time, the wife of 39-year-old Jeffery T. Newton called authorities after Newton threatened to kill himself in the woods behind their Murfreesboro home.
When deputies arrived and ordered Newton to put down the gun, he instead pointed the weapon at them. One of the deputies fired, hitting Newton in the abdomen. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
In August, the Rutherford County grand jury indicted Newton. He's currently being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $57,000 bond. Jail records do not list an attorney for Newton.
