Lee adding five to Hall of Fame and other sports news

Lindsey Sparks and Ricardo Pierre-Louis as All-American athletes, Ken Walston as a basketball player and coach and Dr. John Bratcher as a former men's and women's soccer coach will be inducted into the Lee University Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 7, and team physician and athletic training associate professor Dr. DeWayne Knight will be joining them as the recipient of the Meritorious Award. The public is invited to attend the on-campus ceremony at 5 p.m. and the Hall of Fame banquet at 7 that Friday. Sparks starred in women's basketball for the Cleveland school in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, and Pierre-Louis is the soccer Flames' top career scorer with 101 goals in three seasons (2005-07) and remains the only Lee player drafted by a Major League Soccer team. Bratcher coached Lee men's soccer from 1989 to 2001 and took seven sets of Flames to National Christian College Athletic Association national tournaments, and two of his 1996-98 women's teams went to nationals. He's been in the NCCAA hall since 1996. Walston played on the Lee team that won the inaugural NCCAA basketball national title in 1968 and coached the Lee women to a top-eight AIAW national finish in 1979.

Soccer

• Despite a 19-16 edge in shots, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost 4-0 at VMI in a rainy, muddy Southern Conference women's soccer match Sunday. Kristen Whitehurst scored the first and last goals and Sarah Putney had two second-half assists for the Keydets (3-10-1, 2-3). UTC is 1-12-1, 0-5.

• Sewanee beat Wesleyan of Macon, Ga., 6-2 in women's soccer Sunday with Jordan Najmabadi netting the first two goals and Melissa Zankman, Jamie Samociuk, Kiley Ezzell and Emily Driver also scoring. Ezzell, Tyler Edell and Katie Morrison had assists for the Tigers (8-3), who had margins of 29-4 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

• The Lee University soccer matches schedule for Sunday at Alabama-Huntsville were canceled because of thunderstorms in the area.

Volleyball

• Jamie Sue Wilson and Diamond Stewart had 14 and 13 kills and Sara Jayne Sutton made 32 digs as Sewanee edged visiting Oglethorpe 3-2 in Southern Athletic Association volleyball Sunday. Wilson added 14 digs, and Rachel Schuman and Walker Buxton had 21 and 14 assists with 14 and 11 digs in the 23-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-13 win for the Tigers (6-14, 2-7).

Field Hockey

• Sewanee rallied to win 3-2 at Hendrix in field hockey on Saturday and won 6-1 against Roanoke (Va.) in another match Sunday at Conway, Ark. Katie Wilson, Sarah Barry and Virginia Barry scored for the Tigers (6-6) and Allegra Massey-Elim and Carrie Anderson had assists against Hendrix, which led 2-0 at halftime. Sunday, Sarah Barry had three goals and assisted on the first score by Massey-Elim, and Janie Spilman and Anderson also scored.
