Roberts, LeCompte, Pope are needed

On Nov. 4, Red Bank residents will go to the polls to elect three candidates to be commissioners. This is a very important election for Red Bank. We have the opportunity to finally get a zoning ordinance and do great things with the vacant property where the school was.

With John Roberts, Ed LeCompte and Terry Pope, we can go forward and make Red Bank a place we can be proud of as they will represent us, the residents.

John Roberts has been a very good mayor, and we need to keep him. District 3 has been without representation for months, and Ed LeCompte has the qualities we need for our district. Terry Pope has served on the Planning Commission and understands the needs of the city and will work toward getting the zoning ordinance passed. Your vote can make a difference, so please go to the polls on Nov. 4 and vote for these three candidates.

Holder, Superman not two peas in pod

I try not to look at Clay Bennett's cartoons, but every once in a while I slip up and am startled to realize my mind is opened too wide and my brain compromised.

Sometimes his work annoys or aggravates me. Most times, I can't believe he is so naive. No disrespect, but I have even wondered if he "plays stupid" for his job and actually has more sense. Once I was even in agreement with him, but it was only once and I still harbor the delusion it was someone else's work and his name attributed accidentally.

But recently, seeing the Superman cape on the hanger in the closet ("Eric Holder decides to hang it up"), I actually experienced a physical response. I was ill to the point of nausea. How dare you desecrate the symbolic good of America's Superman!

I believe Mr. Holder will go on to something bigger and better via the president and coattails of his party. We have not seen the last of him. However, when he does rear his incompetent head, he will not be wearing Superman's cape ... unless it was purchased at Walmart.

Sliding duck display disgusting, dangerous

Thank you for printing the picture of the duckling sliding down the slide on the City section last Sunday. I am glad to see actual animal cruelty captured in motion at the county fair.

1. The duckling was only a few days old -- way too young to be taken from its mother and subjected to handling and being dunked in water.

2. That baby had no oil on its down to protect it from water, as this is the normal job of its mother.

3. The baby had no feathers, either, to repel the water.

Any responsible duck owner knows babies raised in captivity need heat and warmth the first few days of their lives, not water! The person responsible for this cruelty should not be allowed to display their ducks in such a way at the county fair. All they are doing is promoting animal cruelty in an already waterfowl-unfriendly city.

We can do better, Chattanooga. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. I am sure that duckling died because of indifference and ignorance.
