Golf Mocs third; Johnston second - and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is in third place out of 12 teams after two of three rounds in the AutoTrader.com Collegiate tournament at Duluth, Ga., and the Mocs' Liam Johnston is tied for second individually after shooting a 71 and a 67 on Monday at Berkeley Hills Country Club. Teammate Wes Gosselin shot a first-round 68 and shares 14th place at 143, and Andrew Weathers and Ewan Scott are tied at 145 with Zac Stolz at 148. UNC Greensboro is the team leader at 14-under par 562, three shots ahead of Virginia Commonwealth and six ahead of UTC, which has a one-stroke edge on Troy. UNCG's Carter Jenkins is the top individual at 136, two ahead of teammate Taylor Coalson and Johnston.

• The Lee University women's golf team is in second place, three shots behind UNC-Pembroke, going into the scheduled final round today of Lee's Lady Flames Invitational tournament at Cleveland Country Club. Lee shot a 307 on Monday, led by Bernadette Little in fourth individually at 76 with Madison Alexander, Sam Burrus and Cailey Gino tied for fifth at 77. UNC's Ashlii Thompson leads at 72, one shot ahead of Shorter's Jennifer Yu. Shorter is third in the team standings at 313, and Dalton State is tied with West Alabama for fourth at 320.

• With Sean Elliott tied for third at 137 and Maximilian Bruck tied for sixth at 142, the Dalton State men's golf team is in third place at 572 in the 12-team State Farm Intercollegiate going into the final round at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell, Tenn. The Roadrunners' Chase Jones and Levi Nix share 18th at 147, and DSC's Dalton Johnson is 10th at 143 playing as an individual. NCAA Division II teams Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman lead at 566 and 570.

• Sewanee junior Emily Javadi from Chattanooga is tied for fourth individually at 151 after two rounds of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview women's tournament at the Baytowne Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla., and fellow Baylor School alumna Alyssa Brown is tied for 32nd and leads Centre's team with a 162. Javadi is five shots out of first place but only two out of second.

General

• The funeral service for Hugh Morrow Sr. of Lookout Mountain, a three-sport University of Alabama letterman in the 1940s, will be held at 12:30 p.m. today at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. His family will receive visitors starting at 11 a.m. The retired businessman, who died Saturday at age 87, was the quarterback, the place-kicker and a defensive player on the Frank Thomas-coached Crimson Tide teams that won the 1945 Sugar Bowl and 1946, the latter capping an undefeated season. A four-year letterman in football and baseball and one-year letterman in basketball, Morrow received the Hugo Freeman Trophy as the university's top 1945-46 athlete. He previously starred at Phillips High School in Birmingham. A RollTide.com report says he was invited to spring training with the Chicago Cubs at the age of 16 but was sent home when the organization made a rule not to sign anyone that young. Morrow moved to Chattanooga in 1951.

Auto Racing

• Jamie Perry of Ringgold won the Steel-Headed Late Model race Saturday night at Boyd's Speedway, and Bryan Pritchard of Harrison was second with Blake Shapiro of Arlington, Texas, third. Jordan Horton finished first with Kenneth Kizzar and Bobby Richey Jr. second and third in the Crate Late Model class, and Booger Brooks and Boonie Gullet won in A- and B-Hobby, respectively, with Joshua Beagan and Daren Black their runners-up. Koty Campbell was first and Bruce Kimber second in FWD.

Volleyball

• The Georgia Northwestern Tech volleyball season ended Monday with a 3-0 loss to the Bryan College junior varsity at the Rossville Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-14, 25-14, 25-22. Casey Chapman led the Lady Bobcats (5-8) in kills with six, and Mikiah Treece and Sabrina Garcia had 10 digs apiece.

Field Hockey

• Sewanee freshman forward Sarah Barry was the Southern Athletic Association field hockey offensive player of the week afer compiling four goals and an assist in two wins this past weekend.
