Silverdale Baptist Academy junior Lindsey Newell recently accepted a softball scholarship offer from NCAA Division II member Shorter University in Rome, Ga. "I like that it's a Christian college, for one," Newell said. "I love the facilities, and they offer what I want to study." Newell, who is considering majoring in business administration, batted .405 with 30 RBIs last spring for the Lady Seahawks with a .998 fielding percentage combined at first base and in the outifled. The game is set for 4 p.m. on the McCallie School baseball field, and tickets cost $5 for individuals or $10 for a family of four, with children 4 and under admitted free. The general public is encouraged to attend, and concessions will be sold. Lawn chairs are welcome. An Orange Grove Center resident will throw the ceremonial first pitch, and Linda Romans from the Orange Grove choir will sing the national anthem.

Tennis

• UTC's Nick Wingord and Luke Saunders won first-round matches before losing Thursday in the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional in Nashville. Wingord beat host Vanderbilt's Pen Binet 7-5, 6-1 and lost 6-4, 6-3 to third-seeded Connor Glennon of Memphis. Saunders trounced Murray State's Max McLean 6-1, 6-2 and lost 6-4, 6-2 to sixth seed Rhys Johnson of Vandy.

Volleyball

• Reinhardt won 3-1 in college volleyball Thursday at Tennessee Temple (16-11), which got 18 kills and six blocks from Victoria Smith, 15 kills and 13 digs from Lydia Vick, 47 assists and 11 digs from Kiara Govan, nine kills and 22 digs from Naomi Posada and 19 digs from Shatoya Medford.

Soccer

• The Lee University men's soccer team played its Gulf South Conference makeup match at Alabama-Huntsville on Wednesday and lost 2-1 on an unassisted goal by Leo De Smedt in the second overtime. John Imwalle gave UAH (10-2, 5-1) its first lead in the 66th minute, but David Perez equalized for the Flames (6-4-2, 1-2-1) 10 minutes later. Tom Halsall made seven saves in defeat. The winning shot came at 107:13.

Basketball

• Chattanooga State and Motlow are among the seven women's basketball teams from four states lined up to play in a "juco jamboree" Sunday from noon until about 6:30 p.m. in both gyms at East Ridge High School. Admission costs $5, according to event director L.J. Kilby, with children under 10 admitted free. Four-year school Hiwassee will be taking part along with junior colleges Chattahoochee Tech from Georgia, Catawba Valley from North Carolina, Northeast Mississippi and Volunteer State.
