DSC, Chatt State get sponsorships and other sports news

Dalton State College announced last week a sponsorship exceeding $10,000 per year from the Tennessee Valley Division of Coca-Cola United (formerly Chattanooga Coca-Cola), joining FSG Bank as a major sponsor of Roadrunners athletics. The first Coca-Cola bottler, and still one of the largest in the United States, recently acquired Whitfield County as a new territory and will be helping DSC's athletic department with scholarship aid, team equipment and beverages, including Dasani and PowerAde, according to the announcement release. "We continue to be blessed with amazing community and corporate support," athletic director Derek Waugh said, noting that the Chattanooga Coca-Cola people "are an amazing group and all about giving back to the community. ... We look forward to a long partnership and representing them in a very positive way." Said Coke's Tyler Maynor: "They are certainly a program on the rise and well respected in their community. We think it is a great partnership as we increase our presence in North Georgia."

• Chattanooga State and EPB Fiber Optics announced last week a partnership called "Powering Dreams" to help continue the athletic and academic success of the community college's sports teams. There will be an EPB Night at one of the basketball doubleheaders, full-page EPB ads in the school's newspaper, signs in the gym and on the ballfield fences, EPB sponsorship of the school's 2015 hall of fame banquet and a sports conference backdrop combining the EPB brand with ChattState Tigers "for use in media and special events," according to the announcement release. "EPB Fiber Optics invests a significant amount of our marketing dollars into community sponsorships and is committed to education," the company's Niki Phillips said. "We are proud to support the college and the athletics program."

Golf

• The UTC women's golf team finished 13th at 923 Sunday out of 16 teams in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate tournament at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville. Agathe Sauzon was the top finisher for the Mocs, shooting a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 15th at 9-over-par 222.

• The pros beat the amateurs 17.5 to 14.5 over the weekend at the Tennessee Challenge Cup at Fairfield Glade's Stonehenge Golf Club. Professional team coach Hunt Gilliland of Chattanooga guided his team to 4.5 to 3.5 wins in the first two rounds of team match play, then the pros won 8.5 to 7.5 in singles match play to win the championship. Council Fire head pro Richard Rebne pickedup three wins, and Crossville pro Greg Wyatt picked up two wins for the professionals Tennessee Wesleyan golf and basketball coach Mike Poe won in 2 and 1 in for the amateurs in singles play for coch Mike Jenkins of Chattanooga.

Soccer

• The UTC women's soccer team lost 9-0 in a Southern Conference match Sunday at Furman. Hannah Dunn made nine saves in defeat for the Mocs (1-14-1, 0-7).

• The Lee University soccer teams split Sunday in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against visiting Mississippi College. The Lady Flames took a 1-0 win on goal by Kinsey Cichowitz just after halftime, while the men lost 4-0.

• Sewanee won both matches in a Southern Athletic Association soccer doubleheader Sunday at Hendrix, with a 4-2 win in the women's game and 1-0 in the men's on a goal by Bobby Zopler in the 80th minute. Mary "Sissy" Frank, Shelby Mechstroth, Tyler Edell and Jordan Najmabadi scored goals in the women's games.

Volleyball

• Sewanee won the first two sets, but wound up losing 3-2 (18-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12) to Millsaps in SAA volleyball Sunday. Diamond Stewart had 15 kills and 16 digs for Sewanee, while Sara Jayne Sutton made 39 digs in the heartbreaking loss.
