A Polk County woman was arrested today and charged with bribing voters during the county's August general election, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Jo Ann Cronan is charged with paying voters to vote for certain candidates. A grand jury indicted her on six counts on Monday.

"For too long, this sort of criminal activity has been accepted as part of life in Polk County," said district attorney general Stephen Crump, who initiated the TBI investigation in late July. "It will no longer be tolerated. Every election cycle this office will be proactive and aggressive in prosecuting those who seek to influence the outcome of elections by illegal means."

TBI is also investigating illegal election activities in Monroe County and may soon present evidence to a grand jury in Monroe, according to Crump.
