Mercer rallies past volleyball Mocs

Mercer pulled out a 3-2 Southern Conference volleyball victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Saturday at Maclellan Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-16, 21-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-12.

Molly Locke had 16 kills and 27 digs and Jordan Gollon and Caroline Carlton added 14 and 12 kills for the Bears (7-16, 3-7). But UTC's Kristy Wieser was the match leader with 18 kills, while Lauren Greenspoon and Anne Bachmann set 24 and 23 assists, Bachmann adding four aces, and Catherine Chason and Greenspoon had 24 and 14 digs. Briana Reid had 10 kills for the Mocs (12-13, 5-5).

• At Cleveland, Tenn., Lauren Williams registered 13 kills with a .524 attack percentage as Lee University beat visiting West Alabama 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) in Gulf South Conference play. Sadie Johnson and Haley Foote had 21 and 14 assists, and Stephanie Hernandez and Sarah Davis made 17 and 15 digs for Lee (9-16, 6-9), Davis adding four aces. UWA had beat the Lady Flames in their first 2014 meeting.

• At Georgetown, Ky., Bryan College left the Boneyard Brawl with a 20-8 record after going in 20-4. Saturday, the Lady Lions lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 28-26) to Indiana Wesleyan and 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-14) to Georgetown, ranked 17th in the NAIA. They had fallen 3-1 twice Friday to teams ranked 13th and 14th.

• At Montgomery, Ala., Dalton State lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) to Faulkner in Southern States play after winning 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-22) the night before at Belhaven. Friday, Savannah Nelson had nine kills, Anna Metzler had 22 digs and Michala Askew had 18 assists and 10 digs for DSC. Saturday, Nelson and Alyne Bianchi had eight kills each, Bianchi and Metzler had 13 digs apiece and Karly Newman added 12 digs for the Lady Roadrunners (11-10, 7-7).

• At Lookout Mountain, Ga., Covenant lost 3-0 to Meredith but won 3-1 over Methodist in USA South matches. Karlie Long had 23 kills and 14 digs in the 25-18, 25-19, 27-25 win for Meredith (21-6, 13-2), while Ginny Moore had 10 kills, Chloe Carlson had 15 digs, Schuyler Moore had 14 assists and seven kills, Cora Schroeder also had seven kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 12 assists and 12 digs for Covenant (21-9, 10-4).

Schuyler Moore had 14 kills, 13 assists and 10 digs while Schroeder had 13 kills and Carlson had 23 digs in the 25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24 defeat of Methodist (13-16, 8-8). Kirkpatrick had 17 assists and Ginny Moore had 11 digs with seven kills.

• At Conway, Ark., Sewanee lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) in a Southern Athletic Association match at Hendrix (24-4, 11-2) despite 15 digs by Sara Jayne Sutton. Jamie Sue Wilson led the Tigers (7-17, 3-10) in kills with seven, and Rachel Schuman had 10 assists.

• At Banner Elk, N.C., Cleveland High School graduate Payton Tipton was one of four King University players making 14 digs in a 3-1 victory over Lees-McRae.

• At Jefferson City, Tenn., Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High had 58 assists and eight digs Saturday in Carson-Newman's 3-2 South Atlantic Conference loss to Lenoir-Rhyne after contributing 36 assists and eight digs in a 3-1 win over Brevard on Friday. Fellow senior Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 13 kills and 15 digs in the loss for the Lady Eagles (20-5, 15-2) after posting 25 digs, four aces and eight kills in the victory.
