Weathers-led Mocs tied for third and other sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is tied for third place with Andrew Weathers tied for second individually two-thirds of the way through the Bridgestone Collegiate tournament at Greensboro, N.C. Weathers is at 5-under-par 139 after his second-round 68, four shots behind Virginia Tech All-American Scott Vincent, and the Mocs shot 298-286 to match Memphis at 584 in the 13-team field. North Carolina leads at 568, three ahead of Virginia Tech. UTC's Liam Johnston is tied for 16th at 146, and Wes Gosselin, Kory Webb and Ewan Scott are at 150, 152 and 153.

• The Dalton State men's golf team made its debut in the NAIA national rankings with a No. 15 listing this week, and the Roadrunners moved up from 15th to 13th in the GolfStats NAIA Top 25. They are coached by former UTC player and assistant coach Ben Rickett.

Tennis

• UTC tennis players Gino Delavalle and Michael Birnbaum won three of their four singles matches Friday and went 3-for-4 again Saturday, this time including a win and a loss together in doubles, in the Georgia Southern Championships at Statesboro. Delavalle, a junior, is 3-0 in Flight C singles after defeating two Florida Atlantic players and one from Kennesaw State. Freshman Birnbaum lost to an FAU foe after defeating a SCAD player Friday in Flight E, and he beat another SCAD representative 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday. Both their loss to an FAU duo and their win over a SCAD tandem were 8-7 (7).

Running

• Tennessee Wesleyan was the winner out of 37 men's teams in the Sand Shark Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Hardeeville, S.C., while Lee was fourth and Dalton State was sixth. TWC was fifth with Lee ninth and DSC 13th in the women's race. Wesleyan had three top-10 finishers in the men's 8-kilometer race -- Joseph Mullen fifth, Arnold Mutuse eighth and Roderick Bowman 10th -- and Dalton State's Spencer Head and Paul Patterson were ninth and 21st. Lee's Harold Smith, Seth Eagleson and Tyler Boone were 15th, 19th and 20th. In the women's meet, Lee's Jessica Childers was 10th and TWC had Robbiccaa Williams 15th, Hannah Rhodes 18th and Leah Chance 21st,

• Geno Phillips won the Signal Mountain 10k Pie Run on Saturday with a time of 35 minutes, 4 seconds for the 6.2 miles, and Joseph Goetz was second in 35:29. Emma White and Jan Gautier were the women's top two finishers and 12nd and 13th overall in 42:19 and 42:32, and Ryan Shrum was the male masters winner and fifth overall in 37:15. Patrick Hall and Peyton Miller were third and fourth. Heather Kulisek won the prediction award by finishing exactly on her 65-minute estimate, and Tripp McCallie was a second off his prediction of 40 minutes even.

Soccer

• Amy Cooley's header off a corner-kick assist from Amy Panayi with 4:15 left in regulation time gave the Tennessee Wesleyan women's soccer team a 1-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over visiting Montreat on Saturday. Then the Wesleyan men won 6-1 with Othello Bah scoring two goals, Nduka Kemjika providing a goal and an assist and David Baisden, Ross Nelson and Anthony Lake also netting shots for the Bulldogs (8-6-1, 4-3), who had margins of 30-6 in shots and 8-1 in corner kicks. The Lady Bulldogs are 8-7-1, 5-3.

• The Bryan men's soccer team is 7-7-2 after losing 1-0 Saturday night to visiting Rio Grande. Bryan's women dropped to 4-10 with a 3-0 loss at Georgetown, Ky.

• Covenant College routed both visiting William Peace teams in USA South soccer Saturday, 9-1 in the men's match and 7-0 in the women's. David Huertas scored at 13:35 and 15:04 and Hunter Brock also scored twice for the Scots (11-4-2, 7-1-1), who got a goal and an assist each from Snoopy Davidson, Danny Knight and Noah Wiersema and other goals from Michael Arango and Builder Brock. Bethany Logan and Rachel Bernard scored two goals each for the Lady Scots (9-8-1, 7-3), while Ruth Terry had a goal and an assist and Anna Porch assisted on both Logan scores in the first 17:17. Jessica Rowe scored from a Gabby Powell assist and goalkeeper Lucy Johnson netted a penalty kick.

• The Sewanee women's soccer team beat visiting Millsaps 2-1, but the Sewanee guys fell 4-2 to the Majors in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Friday. All the scoring in the women's game was in the second half, when seniors Emily Driver and Grace Priest scored from assists by Jamie Samociuk, the team's other senior, and Sissy Frank for the Tigers (11-4, 4-1). Priest's goal came in the 87th minute, after Millsaps (2-10-1, 0-5) equalized in the 72nd. In the men's game, Millsaps (10-5, 4-1) led 3-0 at halftime, but Sewanee (5-8-1, 2-2-1) got second-half goals from Chris Haberstroh and Teddy Benjamin. Ramsey Seagle assisted on Haberstroh's.

Field Hockey

• Centre College defeated Sewanee 3-1 in SAA field hockey Saturday in Danville, Ky., improving the Colonels to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the league. Carrie Anderson prevented a shutout with an assist from Virginia Barry deep into the second half for Sewanee (7-7, 4-4).

General

• UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
