Loretta Mattheiss, wife of Grace Academy boys' basketball coach Jon Mattheiss, suffered a stroke on Oct. 17 and is recovering in an intensive-care unit at a local hospital.

Coach Mattheiss said his wife was in her second week working at a new job when she suffered the attack.

"Fortunately there were workers there who recognized it was a stroke and called 9-1-1," he said, noting that there have been days she's been able to speak, but other days when she has slept all day, which he was told was normal.

"Very slow but steady improvement has been made," he said

The two have been married for seven years. Mattheiss was married to his first wife, Nancy, for 25 years before she died of breast cancer in 2005.

Monday was the first day of basketball practice for TSSAA schools. Mattheiss said assistant coach Darris Waters will be in charge of the team for as long as necessary.
