More Tennesseans support a proposed constitutional amendment on abortion than oppose the measure, according to the first and only public poll on Amendment 1, but the margin is slim and many voters are still undecided.

A poll released by Middle Tennessee State University on Wednesday found that 39 percent of the 600 registered Tennessee voters support Amendment 1, which would grant to power to state lawmakers to set restrictions over abortions.

Thirty-two percent said they opposed the measure, while 15 percent are still undecided. Eight percent of respondents said they won't vote and 6 percent did not answer.

The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Results, dubbed "too close to call" by those who oversaw the poll, offer the first snapshot of where Tennessean stands on an amendment that has garnered not only attention statewide but across the nation.

"For many people, the biggest surprises in this part of our poll probably will be just how close this race is and how important the relatively large number of still undecided voters are," said Ken Blake, director of the MTSU poll.

The 7-percentage-point lead that supporters hold over opponents "is just a shade too large to be considered a statistical tie," Blake said.
