The Royals and Giants were tied at 2 and Kansas City had a runner on first base with nobody out. Eric Hosmer hit a grounder and second baseman Joe Panik made a nice diving stop, flipping the ball with his glove to shortstop Brandon Crawford covering the bag.
Crawford's throw to first base arrived just as Hosmer crossed the bag, and first base umpire Eric Cooper called Hosmer safe. The call was overturned after a review of 2 minutes, 57 seconds.
Cooper got the World Series assignment in part because he only had three calls overturned at first base this season, an exceptionally low rate. The replay umpire making the call in New York was Jerry Meals, who worked the plate for Game 1 last week.
The Royals unsuccessfully challenged a call in Game 4 in San Francisco.
