In less than three months the greater Chattanooga area has raised $8.2 million to help people live stable lives, and United Way community campaign organizers say the goal is $12 million by the end of December.

The campaign is at 68 percent of its goal and $1 million ahead of the pace set at this time last year, board Chairman Tom Glenn said Tuesday.

"In football-speak, we're in the red zone, the place on the field where we're getting close to crossing the goal," he said. "But we still have work to do."

Glenn was among some 180 guests and organizers attending the United Way's community campaign update event.

Marching band music played through speakers as enthusiastic cheerleaders waved green and gold pom-poms while thanking guests and welcoming them to the luncheon.

"Our enthusiasm is going to spread throughout the community," said Sunny 92.3 FM's Kim Carson, who hosted the event with co-worker James Howard.

More than 20 captains of various fundraising teams like education, technology, manufacturing and health care gave reports on how much money they'd raised. Campaign organizers are focused on helping people gain education and regain stability. They also want to help people who are unable to support themselves.

"Are you ready to raise millions?" Howard asked before the reports started.

The money helps 170,000 people in 15 counties, including those helped through the 211 call center, said Kelley Nave, United Way's public relations director.
