Chilcott's Requiem on tap for St. Paul's All Saints' Sunday service

The Senior Choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a guest instrumental ensemble will present the Chattanooga premiere of Bob Chilcott's Requiem in a performance on All Saints' Sunday.

The performance will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the church, 305 W. Seventh St. A reception will follow.

For many, All Saints' Day is simply a day that comes at the heels of Halloween and all the secular activities - costumes, trick-or-treating and candy, according to church officials in a news release.

For churches, All Saints' Day honors God and all of his saints, known and unknown. The day is also a time to honor friends, family and community members who have died in the past year. A Requiem is often presented for All Saints' Sunday, since it is traditionally offered for the repose of souls.

St. Paul's offers "A Service for All Saints' Sunday" as "an enriching opportunity for reflection and remembrance as well as a beautiful premiere performance of a work by an internationally acclaimed composer," says the news release.

Chilcott, described by The Observer as "a contemporary hero of British choral music," has become one of the most widely performed composers of choral music in the world. His large catalog of works, published by Oxford University Press, reflects his wide taste in music styles and commitment to writing music that is both singable and communicative.
