Dental technology for a healthy smile

This fall, Soddy Daisy Smiles is celebrating its sixth anniversary with Drs. Robert and Mandy Shearer, a husband-and-wife dental team. The Shearers moved their office into a new state-of-the art location three years ago, and since then, they have made every effort possible to bring the latest dental technology to Soddy-Daisy.

"At Soddy Daisy Smiles, we believe a patient should be comfortable through every step of the dental process," said Dr. Mandy Shearer. "We are passionate about offering exceptional dental care to every one of our patients. This dental care is coupled with state-of-the-art technology, which can allow for our patients to have the best overall dental experience."

Dentistry has come a long way in making patient checkups more comfortable. With today's technology, dentists are better equipped to detect and treat tooth decay and perform other procedures with maximum comfort.

These are just a few things you will find when you visit Soddy Daisy Smiles

Digital X-Rays -

Compared to traditional film X-rays, these computer-generated images produce a clearer image in a shorter time and have been shown to produce significantly less radiation. The digital dental X-ray system is more sensitive than dental X-ray film systems, so your exposure to X-rays is cut by as much as 90 percent. The large and color-enhanced images let you see what your dentist sees, so it's easier for you to understand how your dentist will treat your teeth. Your dental checkups take less time because the image shows instantly.

Intraoral cameras-

An intraoral camera is a wand-like device that projects a magnified picture from a patient's mouth onto a screen. The image allows both the dentist and patient to see fractured teeth, receding gums, and broken restorations, such as fillings.

CAD/CAM Technology - If you have ever suffered from a cracked or broken tooth, you have probably heard the word "crown," which is a custom-fitted cap designed to cover and restore a broken and worn tooth. Traditionally, that meant two or more visits to your dentist. Soddy Daisy Smiles has a faster option that can often be completed in one visit."

"We use a 3-D digital scan of the teeth to design a virtual restoration, which is then carved out of a ceramic block on a milling machine that we have," explained Dr. Robert Shearer. "The new crown is often ready to be bonded to the patient's tooth the same day as the treatment, which eliminates the need for a second visit."

Spectra Cavity Detection- Early cavity detection means pinpointing problems at an earlier stage, when they would traditionally go undetected. This leads to more conservation and comfortable treatment. Spectra measures the bacteria fluorescence in fissures and smooth surfaces of teeth, often finding the cavity before it is visible in X-ray images.

"Spectra allows us to see the bacteria colonies on a tooth via a Doppler radar-like image, which allows us to discover cavities earlier," Dr. Mandy Shearer said. "Smaller cavities can often be fixed without being numbed, which makes the patient very happy."

Oral ID Cancer Screening Device -

Prior to the invention of cancer-screening devices like Oral ID, dentists and oral clinicians relied solely on the naked eye to detect abnormalities during oral cancer screenings. Because the symptoms of oral cancer are not always obvious, many patients wait too long to be screened, inadvertently allowing the disease to advance considerably. Here's where the use of Oral ID can make a huge difference. The device shines a fluorescent, non-invasive blue light into the patient's mouth. When the light shines on healthy tissue, it fluoresces green; when it shines on abnormal tissue, it remains dark, due to a lack of fluorescence. "Through the use of Oral ID, we're able to spot cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions at much earlier stages, helping to save lives. We provide this service as a courtesy." Dr. Robert Shearer said.

These features are just a few of the services and technologies Soddy Daisy Smiles uses to provide patients with greater levels of comfort and faster recovery from dental procedures than ever before.

"With improved dental technology, we can provide procedures that are more efficient, do not require as much recovery time, and are typically less invasive. All of these improvements in dental technology allow for a patient to be more comfortable during appointments," said Dr. Mandy Shearer.
