Holmberg Arts Leadership graduates 34

Thirty-four participants in the 10th annual Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute class have graduated from this year's program. They will celebrate with a reception at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Chattanooga Theatre Centre.

Launched in 2005, the institute honors long-time board member and arts advocate A. William Holmberg, Jr. The four-month program, offered by ArtsBuild, gives participants leadership skills needed by volunteers in local arts and cultural organizations. The program examines current issues facing the arts community and gives participants a behind-the-scenes view of the arts.

"The Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute has enhanced our community by engaging talented and dynamic citizens to understand the role the arts play to make Chattanooga a great place to live and work," Rodney Van Valkenburg, director of Grants and Initiatives at ArtsBuild, said in a statement.

The 2014 Holmberg Arts Leadership Class is: Kevin Bate, Joel Baxley, Rachel Bodenbender, Robin Burk, Ashley Conrad, April Cox, Laura Cleary, Barbara Cooley, Errin Cusack, Evie Durant and Tiffany Feltner.

Also among the graduates are Rudy Foster, Lee Garner, Laura Grody, Doug Hedwig, Paul LaJeunesse, Steven Lorca, Martha Mackey, Ric Morris, Shane Morrow, Yulia Nasedkina, Kathleen Nolte and Garry Posey.

Rounding out the grads are Meredith Rivers, Katherine Rogers, Daniel Rose, Rick Rushing, Michele Sanborn, Lee Sanders, Mary Catherine Schimpf, Sarah Sherfey, Mark Stone, Craig Tyndall and Shelby Watson.


Phipps is new president of speaker's association

Chattanoogan Vincent Ivan Phipps was recently voted president of the Tennessee chapter of the National Speakers Association. Phipps is the youngest president of NSA Tennessee's chapter as well as the first black to hold the position.

NSA is the leading organization for professional speakers. NSA of Tennessee provides industry updates on research, technology and business development tools and offers networking with current and aspiring professional speakers.

Phipps is a professional speaker and communication coach with 19 years of experience. He is owner and founder of Communication VIP Training and Coaching, which was a top three finalist for Small Business of the Year in Chattanooga. He was a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year presented by Young Professionals of Chattanooga.

Jenkins receives Bushtown Scholarship

Ainek Jenkins, daughter of Phillissia Hambright, is the recipient of the Bushtown Neighborhood Association's seventh annual Bushtown Community Service College Scholarship Award. Jenkins is a sophomore at Berry College in Rome, Ga.

The $500 award presented by Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey recognizes students who have demonstrated an interest in community service through volunteer experience or past employment. Jenkins volunteers as a tutor at local recreation centers in after-school and summer programs.

Eligible applicants must live in the Bushtown neighborhood and be enrolled as a sophomore or junior with 12 or more credit hours majoring in a field that promotes community service.


Phi Theta Kappa holds fall induction

The Alpha Beta Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Chattanooga State Community College recently inducted 58 new members. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes academic achievement of two-year college students. Students must have completed 12 college-level credit hours with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5.

Inducted students were Ethel Sue Adams, Jana Leane Baker, Jessica N. Blair, Monica S. Bonner, Joshua Blake Branton, Melissa Renee Burcham, Jacob Tanner Bush, Cassandra Hope Butcher, Justin Howard Cabe and Amanda Kaye Cantrell.
