New court date set for man accused of burning kitten alive

photo Gary A. Westfield, 31, of Cleveland, was placed in custody today at approximately 1 p.m., according to Evie West, public information officer for the Cleveland Police Department. Westfield is being charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a Class E felony.

A hearing for the man accused of abusing a kitten and burning it so severely that it died has been rescheduled.

Gary Westfield, 31, who has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, was set to appear in court Thursday morning in Bradley County, Tenn.

Westfield made $5,000 bond on the animal cruelty charge, but is being held in federal jail on a previous charge involving the alleged sale of cocaine.

Because he is in the state's custody, certain paperwork is required before he can appear in local court, according to the Bradley County Court Clerk's office.

Paperwork was not filled out in time for Thursday's hearing, so Westfield's court date was rescheduled for Nov. 25.
