Five injured in crash on Highway 27

A helicopter is not something one would likely expect to see on the road in front of them. But that's what locals driving down Highway 27 in Soddy-Daisy saw yesterday afternoon.

A two-vehicle accident occurred around 12:35 p.m. leaving five people injured, including one who was airlifted to Erlanger hospital, according to a release by the Soddy-Daisy Police Department. The other four were transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The accident was caused when a vehicle pulled out from Dayton Pike in front of a vehicle traveling north on Highway 27, the release read.

Shari Hixson was one of several people driving on Highway 27 Sunday afternoon following the wreck. Traffic was bumper to bumper when she got near old Dayton Pike.

Hixson was on her way to work at Tavern Sports Bar and Grille at around 1 p.m. By then, so many cars filled Tavern's parking lot at 12130 Dayton Pike that she hardly had a place to park. People had parked at the Tavern to walk down to see who was involved in the accident, she said, which occurred in the 12300 block, the release states.

"Everybody knows everybody in this town," said Hixson.

However, she didn't know the people in the accident, she said.

Soddy-Daisy police released no names before press time, nor could police officials give more information about the condition of those injured.

Tavern owner John Underwood said he arrived at his bar in time to see that the person airlifted by Life Force was taken from a mangled small red truck.

By the time Soddy-Daisy resident Olivia Wise drove through around 2:45 p.m. on her way to work at the Kangaroo gas station on Highway 27, there was no sign of Life Force. Most of the accident had been cleaned up except for a big oil spill in the road, she said. The cleanup crew poured a substance similar to kitty litter on it, and traffic was back to normal, said Wise.
