ISIL

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Z fister or should you be addressed as " the blood of asterix" why don't you stick to that alternate universe of your VIDEO games and leave the REAL world alone. Every time you try to correct something President Obama has said you just make an even bigger fool of yourself so in the future unless the topic is about one of your video game characters of Gaul you should just stay out of it.

I knew there was something really juvenile and ignorant about your responses but didn't make the connection until a conversation was overheard in a restaurant between two teens. So I decided to google the name they were using and what should I find but the version of the name you appeared with on this forum. I always figured you were using your mama's computer but what I found confirmed it. LOL

Stick to your video games because that's as close as you will EVER come to reality with your attempts to criticize President Obama. No wonder you made that ignorant statement about Obamacare being worse than the Vietnam war. In your video world it probably is worse just like the rest of your Gallic characters!!!LOL. It has taken the US several decades of funding, arming, and training various extremist factions in the Middle East to do America's dirty work, overthrowing out-of-favor regimes and killing untold thousands along the way. Now they ( ISIS,ISIL) are coalescing into one well organized, well funded force that may end up as a new nation state, or possibly a new Caliphate reaching across the Arab world. Our terrorism in the Middle East has created a terrorist monster

Bombing them makes them stronger and draws more recruits. It is way past time to cut Israel lose to fight her own fights with no help or funding from the US. It is time to remove all US forces from the Middle East. Given time the people of the region will sort out their own problems one way or another.

British and French cartographers made a huge mess of the area 100 years ago and the US has compounded the problems over the last 66 years by intervening in the affairs of nations of the region. Commercial and cultural exchanges with other countries develop bonds, political and military interference in other countries internal affairs create hatred and enemies.

A country that cannot manage it's own affairs has no business interfering in those of others! JMO.

What other cultural exchanges would you recommend we engage in with ISIS, ISIL, Iran and the Palestinian radicals?

You do understand should Canada be attacked by terrorist the U.S. would not get involved once our isolationist policy is adopted? BTW, what do you think of the plan to transport those coming through Mexico and crossing the U.S. border illegally right on through to the Canadian border so they can cross into Canada? We plan to let them ride first class inside the train instead of on top.

Al and IB got it right, ISIL is far more descriptive of the group. But Z and everyone ought to go ahead and read the history books before they start their cries for avenging blood.

ISIL is a cancer on the area, but the entire region from the Mediterranean to Indian Ocean has been a lawless, tumultuous void for 1,000's of years, ruled by one despot after another, carrying a heritage of internecine fighting, conquests, rebellion, reconquest, violence and more blood and misery.

Name the one country/nation that has successfully brought long lasting peace to that land before you decide to try yourself. The only ones that have come close used the tactics of brutal, wanton violence to suppress the people in order to maintain a handhold on the land, but then only for a brief instance of time.

We should never have gotten involved, it is a downhill slide - ask the Russians.

Al, others,

I think a better place to start understanding why the word "Levant" is used would be the wiki entry on "Levant:" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levant

The word reflects the parochial Western view of the world, but also describes a geo-politcal arena that coincides with what this crazy, deluded minority is doing there now or threaten to do elsewhere (The majority of Levantines are Sunni or Shia Muslim. There are also Yazidi Kurds, Alawites, Twelvers, Nizari, Druze and Ismailis. - this wiki entry covers every ethnic/religious group mentioned in the news reports, from Lebanon to Iraq).

I.A.H.F.- It's All Hillary's Fault......Barry The Welfare Pimp and former Secretary Of State, Hillary Frumpy Clinton ignored the genocide that Asad was committing on not only his own people but also thousands of Christians. While Hillary slept and gave $50,000+ speeches ISIS metastasized into the cancer it is today. Under the outstanding leadership of President George W. Bush our military victories had enabled the United States to establish large active military bases in the area. Obama and his useful idiots felt that these bases "offended Allah and Islam" by desecrating so called "holy ground" and that if we withdrew and closed the bases the Islamic world would "like" the United States again. Well........zip....there goes another American beheading.

We maintained bases in Japan and Europe for decades after WWII especially in NATO countries during the Cold War. Our military power and presence along with the outstanding leadership of two term REPUBLICAN President Ronald Wilson Reagan....Trust But Verify.....enabled the United States and it's allies to tear down the wall of the oppressive Communist state. It will require the same commitment and effort to destroy Radical Islam. There is very little difference between the culture of hate and murder that is ISIS/Radical Islam/Al Qaida and Nazi Germany or Imperialist Japan. Radical Islamic Terrorism is a world wide culture that must be destroyed. The Republicans knew that it would take a huge military effort over decades to cut out the cancer that is ISIS today. Vote Republican in November and elect a Republican President in 2016 in order to once again establish America as the lone super power that is up to the task of leading a coalition of freedom loving countries against Radical Islam. If we continue Obama's plan of leading from behind without a plan look for terrorism to reach our shores once again on an regular basis. Clay got this one right. ISIS is a cancer that must be excised not by surgical missile strikes but by boots and bases on the ground. Yes, it will be expensive, but remember our military is for one thing and one thing only....defending American interests and freedom by killing our enemies and breaking their will. Spending our tax dollars on Obama's sad, elitist, stifling, class warfare domestic agenda is bad for America making us weaker and more dependent instead of stronger and more self reliant. Spending our tax dollars on National Defense....Bullets, Bombs, and Troops......is a great value in order to defend and protect America and destroy our enemies. It is a fact that Democrats hate to acknowledge preferring to live in some fairyland of Government enforced "fairness".....the world will always be governed by the aggressive use of force. America is a force for good and needs to be the bully on the block against ISIS.

Let's take that statement apart: "We shouldn't have been in Iraq to begin with... We need to go after these savages fast."

As you see the logic fails. If we were not in Iraq, this would not be happening.

We can't easily stop reporters from traveling to where they think the news is located, or compassionate relief workers from going to where misery reigns.

Have you ever heard of Cambodia? We allowed the Khmer Rouge to round up massive percentages of the population, bury them standing up in holes up to their necks, and them beating them to death with sticks. A genocide on the order of millions and we knew about it in the West and did nothing.

Have you ever heard about Jewish refuges from Nazi Germany who, if hte boat was allowed to port, on arrival at US were told sorry, you need to go back, the government knowing with full knowledge what they were going back to?

Have you ever heard of the Cherokee nation in Georgia?

Have you ever heard of the Serbs and Croats in central Europe?

Have you ever heard of a guy named Stalin who killed millions of his own citizens because he considered them suspicious, yet we did nothing in the West.

What is it today about ISIL, and Rwanda, that makes it so vital that we step in and try to stop compared to these previous examples?

Send your sons and daughters to do the pragmatic/Machiavellian job you and a few senators want done, not mine. Use your money, not mine.

9/11 sent the US into a frenzy of spending and fear, maybe the most successful attack of all time. The ragtag al Qaeda, initially funded by Carter and Reagan to fight the USSR, have now grown from a few hundred to untold tens of thousands around the world who are willing to fight and die for the oppressed of the world. ISIS is blowback for bad US policy.

All the US efforts have worked in reverse and become a recruiting campaign for militant Islam. US spending on useless whack-a-mole wars has badly weakened the US economy and prestige through wildly increased debt and international revulsion. US policy has not worked and will not work. It is impossible to kill off an ever-growing percentage of the billion plus people who hate the US for US intrusion into their affairs. Only withdrawal and a fair foreign policy will reduce terrorism.

The talk on this comment board of just KILLING THEM ALL is juvenile fantasy. It can't be done. The US has become an over-extended aging empire nearing collapse. Only pulling back and tending to the serious problems at home will give the US a shot at regaining the national health. The odds of that happening don't look good. The US war-crazies are now in charge and the people seem to blindly follow.

The USSR collapsed overnight from world power to dead broke, all from bad policy. The US seems destined to follow.

z you are still ignoring the principal question, how are you going to go about ending ISIL without destroying everyone. If you assault them, another group will sprout using that aggression as fuel for their guns. You are responding emotionally not rationally.

As for abortions, it is a bit hypocritical to use that argument as abortion is killing and therefore wrong, when you just used a defense of killing yourself. Until you raised the issue, it has not been part of the discussion on ISIL.

Whether it is ten countries, ten of our own armies, a few brigades, a few storm troopers, or a few nukes, how many American deaths are worth killing all of ISIL people? If we kill the ISIL movement that we started by our intervention in Iraq (and Iran) we are doubly complicit in their death. We caused the whole thing, we killed the whole thing. Not only that, we will end up with greater blood guilt, we shall kill far more that ISIL did in its entire existence. "Come out, damned spot! Out, I command you! Hell is murky."(MacBeth, Act 5, scene 1)

From a religious perspective, you will find nothing in the Gospels but condemnation for killing save one death.

Z is so far out to lunch on this, I'll bet he has not looked up who the hydra was and how it was stopped by Hercules with some help from a friend. It's Greek mythology but it strikes to the heart of the problem of the USA trying to involve itself in mid-eastern Islamic affairs.

The idea we can some how change or modify the affairs of predominately Islamic states without their cooperation and desire is the core reason for the attack on 9/11. Inquiring you are smoking crack if you think Carter brought the U.S.S.R. To its knees. Even though Jimmy Carter was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate he was one of our weakest presidents militarily. He single handedly reduced our military to the point where Iranian Radical Islamic Terrorists ( here we go again ) took Americans hostage and held them until President Ronald Reagan was brought into office whereby they released the hostages. Carter even tried to rescue the hostages but botched the operation. Carter left office in shame and had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with "Star Wars" and the great military build up that Ronnie drive throughout his awesome eight years in office. When Reagan, who by the way makes Obama look like the weak Ivy League poser that he is, was in charge America was respected throughout the world because they knew that Ronnie would go All John Wayne on their ass if they messed with us.

Obama....impeach the welfare pimp please! Two more years of this weakling and America may never recover.

inquiringmind...you may have the most inappropriate user name on any forum. Your mind goes to what you want to believe is reality.

Your logic of crediting Carter with Regan's success with Russia supports the thesis of many that Reagan deserves the credit for Clinton's good economy years. Was Carter not up to his ears in the middle east which led to Sadat's death and the hostage situation that he could not deal with. What is your theory of why they were released shortly after Reagan took office?

What do you think should have been the reaction to 9/11? What would you propose should there be a similar event, apologize and withdraw from their country? It may not be as far in the future as you might think when this country is faced with that decision. There would be no re-emergence of radical Islamist if we were to do what should be done without regard of collateral damage, but we won't. What is Obama's strategy or objective regarding ISIS? I would bet once he can clearly articulate it he has those that can determine how to accomplish it with minimum or no loss of American lives.

Do you know anyone that lives in France or has lived there in the last few years? If you do then put your inquiring mind to work and learn the reality of how these extremist think, it is not only America they target. Why are the radical extremist nuts killing children, women and other Muslims? Is it because other countries are trying to bring peace to the region? I do agree we need to get in or out, it is not possible to be "half pregnant". I am tired of hearing your president say we need a strategy to deal with these extremist...he was saying that during the campaign and is still saying it.

fairmon and maxi,

The very fact you can say, "Was Carter not up to his ears in the middle east which led to Sadat's death" points to your ignorance. Carter was President in 1977-19812, Saddam was hanged in what 2011???

You ignorami only need to go back and review the DoD budgets for his years in office to verify that he started the process that forced USSR to spend itself into the ground in a race with us to see who got there first. It almost destroyed our own economy.

You are totally screwed up on the facts, like the radical Muslims, you are blinded by your distorted ideology and no better than they are.

The technical word for you two is "revisionists."

The practical word is foolhardy. You put ideology above reason, the fundamental definition of "foolhardy."

Think about it, it does not matter what your intentions are, if your actions lead someone to think your intentions are otherwise, that is the reality for the other person, you are measured not against what YOU think but what THEY think.

Only pride and ignorance pursues the course you propose. They kill children for the same reason white southern plantation owners killed rebellious slaves, they represent a threat to their existence.

You bemoan Obama's position on ISIL, something Bush created?? The only solution is to get the hell out and let them slaughter each other until someone decides enough is enough. They are a free people, they have the right to their own self-determination, be it dictatorship or democracy, but never, not ever, will we force them to be other than they choose to accept.

If you let your life be governed by desire to maintain pride, you yourself are damned to hell on earth.

I'm sick and tired of Reds asking what President Obama's strategy is. Other than putting boots on the ground what the hell else is left? If we continue to bomb the terrorists how many innocent men, women and children are going to be killed as collateral damage? The only thing that type of tactic creates is more enemies against the US for killing the innocents. If the people who were trained by the US for over a decade laid down their weapons and took off when ISIL invaded Iraq, why the hell should one more drop of blood from a US soldier be shed when the soldiers of Iraq wouldn't defend their own country?

As far as those journalists getting killed by ISIL, I have tremendous regret for their families and colleagues however, they knew the risks going in but chose to go there anyway. I do not see the US launching a full scale military attack putting the lives of hundreds of US soldiers on the line for the danger those journalist chose when they went into Iraq. If the President wants to send in a Black Ops team to hunt down the perps then he should do so. As Joe Biden said today, follow them to the gates of hell.

Stop making excuses. Is there an excuse for Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, and so on? But, for some reason we're responsible for the Muslim's anger, and they get cut some slack? If we didn't exist, they'd find someone else to blame.

CNBC....

The gathering of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders in Wales is taking place at the most alarming time for geopolitics in years – some say decades.

The 28-country group, formed in the light of the Cold War, seemed in the eyes of many to risk irrelevance with the collapse of the Soviet Union. With conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East threatening Western influence over the world, its apparently dormant power is now being reawakened.

The Middle East crisis has resurfaced again, with the added twist that this time the U.K. appears to have exported terrorists born in the country to wage what they regard as holy war in the region, under the Islamic State (IS) banner. This new generation of social media and internet savvy jihadist has ensured front page coverage by publicizing the killings of two American journalists in recent days – and threatening the life of a U.K. citizen next.

Methods for targeting ISIS, which aims to establish a new Islamic caliphate, are also top of the agenda in Wales. Obama has pledged to "degrade and destroy" the group, which sprang out of Al-Qaeda, but hasn't yet said how.

An interesting news tidbit this a.m.

The last time the GOP held power in both chambers and a Democrat resided in the White House was when Bill Clinton was President. And, during that six year period, the S&P 500 rallied 188 percent.

We are already in the middle of a historic bull rally, which some will attribute to Fed action and/or President Obama's legacy of inaction and/or the GOP's revisionist stance over the past six years. But whatever it is, it's clear the country can expect another 24 months of boring political rhetoric, empty promises and mindless dribble.

the less action Washington takes, the better the returns on Wall Street.

Many economic indicators show the economy is doing quite well, although there has been a change in the nature of the work force. The FED is nearing the time to ease up on interest rates, medicare costs have slowed or decreased, more people have health insurance that ever before, the list goes on, and the President has low approval numbers, though not nearly as low as those of Congress.

Every action that has ameliorated the economic crisis was opposed by the Reds, imagine what would have happened had they been successful in thwarting the actions.

What the public does not see is how much the lost economically and how much longer the economic crisis lasted because of Congressional inaction due to the continual obstruction of the Reds. It is a $16 trillion crisis caused by Red Bush the Younger's guns and butter mentality.

We face the potential for war, or as the apologists euphemism say, "continued military action," in the Mideast because of the atrocious advice and political egotism of Bush the Younger. We will continue to pay the price for that exercise in pointless futility in the enmity of Islam towards the West that it has inflamed.

The less intelligent action Washington takes, the worse it is for the citizens of this country.

"What other leaders in the world has he developed a good relationship with"

Is that necessarily the good measure of a President of the United States?

"Regan and Thatcher, Bush and Blair, Bill Clinton influenced many. Why do so many not respect or respond to Obama?"

In all seriousness, it very well could be because he is black. How many black leaders from other nations are treated warmly? Are there any black leaders left outside of Obama today?

"He says we need an international coalition but he has yet to build one around any issue."

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the recent activities in both Syria and Iraq being conducted by coalition forces?

"Are the polls saying 71% think the country is going in the wrong direction or is it saying the country has no direction."

What can that possibly mean? No direction?

"Have you watched his last few press conferences and briefings? Could you tell what he was trying to say? He may be close to a nervous break down or mental collapse."

Yes I have watched them and I don't begin to see anything like that at all. I do see honesty. No one knows how to deal with ISIS, nor is it going to be easy to deal with terrorists, no matter where they are.

They hide in cracks and crevices like cockroaches. They use innocents as shields. How many years and how many nations have tried to deal with terrorists, to no avail?

"There may be a good reason why he is playing more golf and keeping busy with fund raisers and other low stress activities."

The man was on vacation. He has played no more golf than any other President, and has had far fewer days of vacation than any other President in the past 100 years.

Fundraisers are done by EVERY President, no matter which political party they are affiliated with. The instance of fundraisers always increase during mid-term election years.

Criticism over his golfing is highly misplaced, as are his vacation days. When compared to other modern-day Presidents, the numbers pale sharply.

But don't take my word for it. Look it up.

One more thought...

If any one of you bashers had the job that he has, you'd find your escape every once in awhile yourselves. Given the level of crap the man has to endure every time a television is turned on, I know I would have quit after the first term.

But he's still there. He's still the President. And despite any and all criticism, the man is doing as good or a better job than other Presidents have done and the history books will reflect that very thing in the future.

In 2012, Khaled Al-Islambouli's mother spoke highly of her son's assassination to the Iranian Fars News Agency. She said "I am very proud that my son killed Anwar Al-Sadat… The government called him a terrorist, a criminal, and a murderer, but they didn’t say that was he was defending Islam. They didn’t say anything about the about Camp David, or how Sadat sold out the country to the Jews and violated the honor of the Islamic nation.

Al sez, "it very well could be because he is black." concerning President Obama. THis was one of the main concerns voiced about the Chinese who have marked racist tendencies. I think Obama did quite well.

As for fairmon, and why the Iran embassy hostages were released shortly after President Carter left office? Why do you think? They avoided doing under President Carter's watch, in fact from reports it was a carefully orchestrated event with the Carter administration. So old Ronnie, the illusionist, had nothing to do with it. (Isn't it interesting the Reds love a candidate whose profession is the art of deception(acting)?)

Sadat (not Saddam as I misread your earlier comment) was not assassinated by any policy of President Carter, but by the Brotherhood whose motivation is the very factors I mentioned, the general enmity towards the West that it views as the cause of the collapse of its empire. It would do you good to locate the PBS documentary "The Sword of Islam" to fully appreciate the social and religious dynamics of middle eastern Islam.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make talking about the fellows who killed Sadat. President Carter achieved the only meaningful progress in the conflict between Israel and Islam, the radicals killed Sadat because of it. As you know President Carter is and was a strong proponent of the so-called two-state solution. Basically it goers like this: Israel cannot allow full citizenship of Palestinians in Israel by annexing both land and people because the new voters would form a strong voting block potentially at odds with desired Israeli policy. It can't continue to occupy the land and keep the Palestinians as aliens or the current violence continues. It can only move towards peace by allowing a Palestinian State and working to ensure good relations. Of course it requires Palestinian consent and overcoming the hostility of muslims towards the acts of Israel.

Today, Israel is again talking the two-state solution as a solution to the Palestinian problem, my, my.

If you think anyone can win in the Mid-east by force, you really need to read up on the Greek mythological creature called the Hydra.

No thinks but I am not surprised you base your conclusions on some myth that is not based on fact but on some being or hero or event with no determinable basis of fact or normal explanation.

Sadat was killed by jihadist in retaliation for agreeing with that which Carter proposed. I would have no problem with withdrawing totally from the middle east but I am not delusional enough to think that would not embolden the radicals and once some element gained control they would attack the U.S. and others in their attempt to rule the world and impose their beliefs and Sharia law on every living creature they chose to allow to live.

The only thing that might work would be for every nation on earth to refuse to interact or trade with any middle eastern or north African country. They have no means to sustain themselves and the innocent would suffer also. To think that might happen is as much a myth as those you believe.

It's a tough job selecting the dumbest post of the month (so far), but the award goes to ALPO's brilliant post......Do you want to know why Liberal talk radio has never been a success? Because Liberals don't need cheerleaders. We are all independent thinkers. We are not sheep who need to be led everywhere we go or who must be told what to think. Stupid, but funny, yes?

September 4, 2014 at 10:25 a.m.

I've never seen in my lifetime a better example of sheeple following someone than you leftists falling for BO. What a demagogue.

See what happens at the Democrat Convention when "independent thinkers" try and voice their opinion. Liberals all sound the same.

They get you guys all riled up about how bad the country is and you guys believe it. Another example is when a "conservative" poster on this board made a statement about how the DHS was buying all of the .22 ammo. Nothing is a better example of "sheeple" then for someone falling for this BS and then repeating it.

However, you wouldn't understand the difference because he has supported President Obama in the last two elections. For you that must mean he's no CONSERVATIVE.

so now fairmon is blaming President Carter for Sadat's death: "Sadat was killed by jihadist in retaliation for agreeing with that which Carter proposed."

He shows a remarkable knowledge of Egyptian political history, rivaling his knowledge of Greek mythology. Mythology like most great literature is derived from human experience. Usually one finds accurate lessons in them that offer guidance for current life. The middle school-like taunt "you can only quote myth" does not hurt.

Let's explain it to him as his ninth grade english teacher might:

begin lesson: Every time Hercules cut a head off the many-headed Hydra two sprang back. This points out the hopelessness of his struggle to defeat the guardian to Hades, a parallel to fighting an enemy of contagious ideology such as ISIL.

With an assistant Hercules realized he could cut and cauterize each stump of a neck preventing a new head from growing until he got to the one immortal head that he severed killing the entire beast. Thus victory over a powerful, contagious, multi-headed beast requires (1) help and cooperation of an ally and (2) destruction of the entire beast.

If radical Islam is a hydra and ISIL, like Al Qaeda are some of its deadly heads, then for the US to eliminate the monster, it requires allies and it requires total destruction, not of ISIL or Al Qaeda, but of radical Islam.

However, then even radical Islam becomes a head of an even larger Hydra, Islam itself. Thus to exterminate ISIL and subsequent organizations derived from radical Islam requires destroying Islam. This is an unpalatable, soul-destroying, spiritually corrupting, anti-Christian idea. The best bet unless you are an early Greek hero (not a late one like Oedipus whose dramatic irony of being entrapped helplessly in intellectual suffering by his own fate transcends Hercules' power to escape his) is to avoid the monster since we do not need to be in its vicinity and it never desires to enter our congregation.

Of course if we decided to destroy Islam, first we'd want to read Oedipus.

end lesson.

I'm also not going to give you a history lesson on the Iran Embassy affair, you can research it your self and in the process actually learn and remember more.

Now let's see who falls next from the ranks of GOP Governors. LOL

There's Christie from NJ who is still under investigation; Perry fromTexas who was just indicted and of course there's Scott Walker of Wisconsin who is under investigation. Looks like the GOP field for 2016 won't have as many candidates as they had in 2012 because most of their rising stars will be in jail. Cruz, Rubio, Jeb Bush and Rand Paul are all they have left. fairmon, sez, "I am familiar with the poorly planned and failed rescue attempt (of the hostages in the US Embassy in Tehran) as well." you obvious haven't read exactly what happened to cause the mission to fail. It failed by the design of the DoD helicopters developed under Nixon. They were not able to cope with airborne sand.

I'm sorry abstract thinking using literary allusion is a challenge for you. Did you go to school in Soddy Daisy by any chance? You are welcome to live in your de-lusions about both the past and present.

It is a shame you cannot see that ISIL is a consequence of the US involvement in Iraq, or that the Muslim Brotherhood who killed Sadat is a consequence of muslim cognitive dissonance connected to the heritage of its former large empire.

I can safely say if we were to pursue your idea about foreign policy in the Mideast we will still be there fighting in a millennium. I do have one more allusion for you. You are what we call a "tyro."

If you cannot put yourself in the mind of the opponent and put aside your own prejudice in order to truly understand their emotion and thinking you are most likely to underestimate them and fail to meet your own objective.
