Police do jobs no one else wants and other letters to the editors

Police do jobs no one else wants

I'm not a cop. I don't even know any cops hereabouts, but once long ago, I carried a sidearm and worked for my chief of police. That brief exposure taught me respect for cops, who have to enforce our laws and tolerate abuse and misunderstanding while we sit in front of our TV, watching some talking head tell us what mistakes those cops made. Before you condemn cops, think: 1. Cops deal often with people who curse them, puke on them, urinate on them, and, given a chance, will hurt them. Are you polite to people who treat you like that? 2. Cops have to give bad guys the first punch. Could you wait for a huge dude to sock you, then nicely ask him to desist? 3. We tell cops to do things no one else would dare do. Will you go into an abandoned house at 2:30 a.m. knowing that there are drug addicts there -- with weapons? Would you ask them nicely to please accompany you to jail? You expect cops to be saints or angels. But cops are human -- and surprisingly good at a nasty job.

Appreciation Cited For Williams

I would like to say amen to the letter to the editor written by Jacque Benderman, published on Aug. 17. Clarence Williams has done so much for us seniors, and we truly love, appreciate and miss him. Come back, Clarence, please.

Brown Hubbub Only Posturing

It is disturbing the black and liberal white community is all riled up about a young black thug, now deceased, who attacked an officer doing his job. This young man had just allegedly robbed a convenience store and then viciously attacked a police officer. Now blacks are rioting, protesting and chanting "no justice, no peace." May I point out to many apparently uneducated folks that the concept of justice is that if you commit a crime, you will be punished. It would appear Brown got what he deserved. That's justice. Now let's have peace. If two people begin fighting and one of them has a gun, the fight becomes over the gun. It really doesn't matter if one was unarmed at the onset of the fight. Had Brown won, the outcome would be a dead officer. This fact gets ignored in all the fake rage about a young black man being killed. Blacks and liberals appear to care only if someone not black kills a black person. Other black men in Chicago, the president's hometown, shot 26 black men that same weekend. Did you see any Obama representatives at their funerals? It's all posturing and race-baiting.

Lone Oak Civic League Thanks all for help

The Lone Oak Community Civic League on Signal Mountain would like to thank the volunteers and businesses that made it possible to raise much needed operating funds during the recent Highway 127 yard sale. Several local businesses supported our efforts by donating supplies during this event. We would like to thank Bi-Lo on Signal Mountain Road, Bobby Brewer of Mountain Garden Center, Walmart Supercenter in Dunlap, Pruett's Signal Mountain Market and Sam's Club of Chattanooga. The Lone Oak Community Center is home to many activities which benefit our community. This includes the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department, the Lone Oak Free Health Clinic and Free Dental Clinic, a weekly adult education class for those who want to obtain their high school equivalency diplomas, the Lone Oak Library, the Lone Oak Quilters, community gatherings and more. Vendor space rentals and food sales are our only fundraiser during the year. We could not continue our good work without the generosity of our volunteers, businesses, and the yard sale patrons who visit and dine at our facility. Thank you to all who supported us!

On police cultural barriers

I read with interest the front page article "Cultural barriers and cops" that appeared on the front page of the Aug. 28 edition of the Times Free Press. The main subject matter appeared to be communication problems between the police department and the Hispanic community, and several examples were presented of recent difficulties. However, the fault seemed to be placed primarily on the department: "Only eight of the department's 70 sworn personnel are certified as Spanish interpreters -- only 13 Hispanic police officers." I agree that more emphasis should be made to increase the availability of interpreters, but what about the Hispanics? If an immigrant (whether legal or illegal) chooses to move to a country that has a different native language, shouldn't the immigrant consider making proper preparations? Let's put the blame where it belongs!

Much of what you say is correct, Mr. LAUDEMAN. We hire the police to do what we won't, then curse them for slowing us down when we want to speed. I'm not out in the street with people shouting at me. If the officers feel the need for extra armor, that should be their call.

Dan, there are far more dangerous jobs than police work. It's apparent you've been watching too much faux news and listening to far too many rightwinglers on the Brown tragedy. Wilson was not brutally beaten by Brown. And the allege store incident had absolutely nothing to do with why Wilson confronted Brown. But it's a waste of time trying to explain basic common sense to the senseless and illogical.

In fact, Wilson had more of a trouble history than brown. Makes you wonder why do these police depts. continue to knowingly hire these people with troubled histories? Could any if this hiring then placing these obvioiusly troubled cops in primarily poor communities in midsized and large cities and small towns that's predominately poor and minority have had anything to do with the gentrifucation plans that's swept across the nation for the past 30-40 years?

I can recall when locally some of the worst of the worse in the field were sent into primarily poor and historically racially mixed areas. In those racially mixed communities specifically black longtime residents became a target for harassment.

Another Ferguson cop was let go from another Missouri police dept. in another city for pistol whipping a 12 year old girl. And that was only one of many complaints that cop already had against him. The police dept. in Jennings Mo . where wilson previously worked as a cop the entire force was disband for corruption, fraud and use of excessive force against Jennings citizens. It's seriously doubtful cops with such a troubled history would have been rehired in a middled-classed small predominately white town or community. Jennings Mo . is also a small predominately black town.

ki, this answers my question, you DID miss the spelling classes! We are indeed fortunate to have a person who knows so much about law-enforcement, the history of Ferguson and Jennings,MO...and everything else that you comment on. It is good that you follow your heart in writing negatively about anything connected to authority. Last week it was "penis envy," this week its "DR" and more expertise on a crime that has not gone to trial, therefore, not been solved. It is fine for you go undaunted on your trip of following your heart, but please take your BRAIN, if any.

I can assure, saggywe. I know more about law-enforcement than you will ever know. Even the darker/dirtier side to it, and you're apparently an insider. ;)

Now we know for sure how america will become extinct.

No need to worry about terrorists, ISIS/ISIL or even gang bangers for that matter. Between quick with the trigger cops, the good guys with guns killing other good guys without guns in acts if road rage, it's only a matter of time before every american totally annihilate one another.

So Wilson wasn't hurt. Really? Takes quite a bit of force to fracture an orbital socket, and he sure didn't do that to HIMSELF. I'm normally NOT on the side of the cop. In fact, I have a LONG history of friction with cops. I utterly despise them. But they're human and the thug that beat on Wilson and forced him to shoot deserved EXACTLY what he got. And you can CLAIM Wilson had a "history" all you want and it means NOTHING without proof. Show us the proof.

Mr. Latta is right. Again although I have absolutely NO love for cops, I'm coming down on their side here. These lazy, sorry excuses for civilized humans come in here illegally and mooch off this country without having even the respect to try to learn the language. I have worked in convenience stores, dept. stores, etc., and I KNOW what a pain in the butt they are. Not even a cop should have to put up with them blabbering that banana republic gibberish at him. I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with any of them who have the respect to learn the language, get a visa, and go through the steps required to become a citizen and I'll do anything for him or her that I would for any other citizen, and be proud to have him/her as a neighbor. But as for the rest of them, No speakuh da English, then go back where you came from.

Damn!! RShuktz-you mean to say that faked eye fracture story put out by some Ferguson police insider is still circulating?!

Darren Wilson did not suffer a fractured eye socket or orbitol blowout, and that picture of someone circulating on rightwing websites showing someone with such an injury was actually pulled from a medical website. But don't let truth and facts get in the way of rightwingnut lies. Above is an update link from the Pittsburgh Courier. There are also other reputable news websites all the way to Europe citing Wilson suffered no such injury. Checksum' out.

But cops are the good guys. They aren't capable of lying and feeding false information to the media who, in turn, run with that false information without question and feed it to the public, or filing false reports themselves, right? {sarcasm}

p.s. why do you think that eye socket injury story mysteriously disappeared from mainstream media as quickly as it appeared on the scene?

ki, I'm not saying I disagree with you, I'm just saying you are WRONG! I am sure you know more about the "dirty" side of law enforcement than anyone else in the world. There are many of us who listen with rapt attention as you hold us spellbound with your tales from this arcane world you live in. Why not give us an article that details some of your more famous cases and life achievements? Just curious, is "gentrufucation" a neologism

Nope! saggydiaper. I just refuse to be goaded or baited by ignorance parading itself as knowledgeable. ;)

Strange, or predictable? Someone like rshultzy above who has actually contributed postings basically advocating the shooting of cops, and all he gets from someone like you is silence? But I get stalked? priceless!

Can't stand truth, can you, saggy?

Whatever I have or know, I'd never post it here anyway. Plus, no one's died and made you gawd yet ;).

Hopefully we will raise enough money for Officer Wilson to defend himself. Lynching doesn't serve anyone's interest.

Mr. Brown's case has been amply presented by national figures (none of whom were present). He is repeatedly described as an 'unarmed, young black man'. Are they saying that 'unarmed' is a distinguishing characteristic for a young black man?

re: "lynching doesn't serve anyone's interest"

unless it's an unarmed black man gunned down in broad daylight by a cop or a young unarmed black man with a can of ice tea and bag of candy gunned down by a self appointed neighborhood watchman. Then it's open season for character assassination of the deceased. Now many rightwingnut news outlets and talk show host are claiming the height and weight of Brown was enough to declare him a dangerous weapon.
