Dan Howell takes oath of office as new state representative

NASHVILLE - Republican Dan Howell of Cleveland was sworn in early as the new state representive for House District 22 in a ceremony this afternoon.

Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee administered the oath of office as Howell's wife, Beverly stood by in the House chamber.

Howell will fill the nearly two months remaining in the term of former Rep. Eric Watson, R-Cleveland, who was elected Bradley County sheriff and took office earlier this month.

After getting sworn in on a Bible that has been in his family for five generations, Howell said he "will do my best not to disappoint" his constituents.

Fellow Rep. Kevin Brooks, R-Cleveland, among about two dozen spectators, said that by getting sworn in early Howell have will a slight jump in seniority on newcomers to the Tennessee General Assembly.

Howell won his Aug. 7 GOP primary and faces no opposition in the Nov. 4 general election.
