Lee women's golf wins Smokey Mountian tourney and other sports news

Lee University's women's golf team won the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate golf tournament over the weekend in Sevierville, Tenn. Lee finished with a two-day score of 611, five shots ahead of West Florida in second place. Caroline Moore led the Lady Flames with a two-day total of 5-over-par 149 to tie for fourth individually. Bernadette Little was a stroke back at 150, followed by Sam Burrus (154) and Madison Alexander (158).

Soccer

The UTC women's soccer team lost 2-0 to Lipscomb on Sunday at Finley Stadium. The Mocs kept the game scoreless until the 79th minute when Carolyn Springsteen scored off a corner kick, and Ellen Lundy added a second goal just before the final whistle. UTC senior goalkeeper Taylor Mangrum made eight saves in the match

• The Lee University women's soccer team lost 2-1 Sunday night at Barry in southern Florida. Nicole Blanchard scored the Lady Flames' lone goal.

• Second-half goals by Michael Arango, Snoopy Davidson and Ian Meredith overcame a two-goal deficit and gave Covenant a 3-2 win over visiting Millsaps in men's soccer Saturday night. Covenant (2-1) had a 21-11 edge in shots with a 15-5 second-half margin against the Majors (3-1). The Scots had a 6-1 margin in corner kicks after halftime.

• Walker Ueland's goal on a free kick from just outside the box completed a comeback to a 4-3 overtime win over visiting Piedmont for the Sewanee men's soccer team Saturday night. Piedmont (3-1) scored twice in the match's first eight minutes, but Ford Emerson netted a penalty kick for the host Tigers (2-2) at 10:38. Max Hawes at 44:04 and Ramsey Seagle at 71:23 scored equalizers for Sewanee.

• Shelby Meckstroth continued her sizzling season start with two goals and an assist in the Sewanee's 3-1 women's soccer win Saturday over Maryville at Birmingham. She has eight goals and three assists for the 4-0 Tigers, who outshot the Scots 33-10 and had a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Natasha Saunders scored the first goal at 16:40. Allyson Hale scored and Rachel Taylor had 10 saves for Maryville (1-2).

Running

• Covenant College's Beth Burgess made it 2-for-2 in cross country meet wins this season with the 6-kilometer victory Saturday in the Sewanee Invitational. Her time of 23 minutes, 44 seconds was 14 seconds better than her previous school record. The Lady Scots finished third as a team with Ruthie Cargill finishing seventh and Anna Hankal, Margaret Fitch and Esther Anderson 17th, 18th and 19th. Sewanee was the women's winner with Amy Lee fifth individually and Cate Hargrove, Tricia Murphy, Katie Lafferrandre and Lexy Rouse ninth, 10th, 12th and 13th. NCAA Division II member Lee University dominated the seven-team men's 8k with Seth Eagleson winning in 26:13.71 and Joseph Crook, Tyler Boone, Harold Smith and Terris Elliott finishing third through sixth; Camden Perez was 10th for good measure. Sewanee was fourth with Logan Stockton seventh and Mark McAlister 17th, and Covenant was fifth with Eliot Kaufmann and Graham Massot 12th and 14th individually.

Volleyball

• Schuyler Moore had 10 kills, 19 assists and 11 digs and Ginny Moore had 12 kills and 20 digs in Covenant's 3-2 volleyball victory over Berry at Transylvania this past weekend, but the Lady Scots lost 3-0 to Millikin, Transylvania and Bethany and now are 6-3. Chloe Carlson had 24 digs against Berry.

• Despite 30 kills by Jamie Sue Wilson and 22 by Diamond Stewart, the Sewanee volleyball team lost 3-1 to Pikeville and 3-2 to Cumberland in matches Saturday at Sewanee. Sarah Jayne Sutton had 49 digs and Rachel Schuman and Walker Buxton totaled 39 and 26 assists for the Tigers (3-4). The Cumberland match was 24-26, 25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 15-13.

Field Hockey

• Kat Mulligan scored in the first minute from a Carrie Anderson assist for the Sewanee field hockey team Saturday, but Washington & Lee netted the next three goals and won 4-2 in the match played in Memphis. Anderson also assisted on Sarah Barry's goal for the Tigers (0-3), who had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Generals are 4-1.
