Covenant College senior Beth Burgess and freshman Margaret Fitch were USA South cross country runners of the week for the second time in a row, and three other athletes from the Lookout Mountain school joined them with weekly honors Monday. Burgess repeated as the women's overall top runner after winning the Sewanee Invitational with a school-record 6-kilometer time of 23 minutes, 44 seconds, and Fitch again was the conference rookie of the week after her 26:27 finish. The Scots' Eliot Kaufmann was the men's runner and rookie runner of the week for his 12th-place 27:26 8k at Sewanee. Covenant's Anna Porch and Ian Meredith were the league's soccer players of the week, Porch after registering five goals and an assist as the Lady Scots went 2-1 and Meredith after producing two goals and an assist in two matches. He had the late winning score in the Scots' 3-2 defeat of Millsaps.

• Sewanee had two Southern Athletic Association players of the week, Shelby Meckstroth as the women's soccer offensive honoree and Logan Stockton as the men's cross country runner. Meckstroth has eight goals and three assists in her team's 4-0 season start, including three game-winning goals, and Stockton was seventh individually in the Sewanee Invitational meet dominated by Division II member Lee University.

• Bryan's Kara Stamper was the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball hitter and player of the week for her role in the Lady Lions' 4-0 week, and Tennessee Wesleyan's Joseph Mullen and Robbiccaa Williams were the AAC runners of the week. Stamper, a 6-foot sophomore, had 21, 18, 23 and 20 kills in Bryan's four matches and was in on six blocks against St. Catharine. Williams was first in 18:32 in the women's 3-mile at the Buffalo Valley Stampede at Unicoi, Tenn., and Mullen was second in 19:03 in the 6k.

Golf

• Sewanee junior Emily Javadi from Chattanooga and Baylor School began her 2014-15 golf season with the individual victory Monday at the MCC Women's Intercollegiate tournament at the Montgomery (Ala.) Country Club. Javadi shot 148 (73-75) for the two days, while senior teammate Jenna King tied for 11th at 162 and freshman Brook Vann tied for 18th at 166. The Tigers were fifth out of eight teams. Host Huntingdon won.

Running

• Local runner Jessica Marlier was the women's winner of the Canton (Ohio) City Marathon on Sunday with a time of 3 hours, 14 minutes, 31 seconds. She was participating as a pacer for the group shooting for 3:15 and turned in the 17th best time overall. She is an assistant varsity cross country coach at Girls Preparatory School. "We are fortunate to have such a talented runner working with our girls," Bruisers coach Jeff Gaither said in a school release.

Auto Racing

• Tyler Caheely won the Super Pro class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. The son of longtime Brainerd racer and national champion Eddie Caheely recently won an NHRA national race himself. Saturday he won with a 5.18-second burst on a 5.18 dial in his dad's Chevrolet-powered rear-engine dragster. Tyler Gossett was second and Gary Blankenship was third. Stephen Ingram of Centerville, Ga., won the Foot Brake class with a 6.63-second run on a 6.62 dial in a 1965 Nova SS, and Darryl Goodner from Ringgold was second in his 1987 Ford Thunderbird. Jake Clayton of Ooltewah was the Junior Dragster winner with Soddy-Daisy's Kaleb Winters second. Cynthia Warnock continued her run of having the low elapsed time (4.61 seconds) and top speed (149.50 mph) of the meet.

• Jamie Perry of Ringgold held off Riley Hickman of Ooltewah to win the main race Saturday night at Boyd's Speedway. Dunlap's Andy Miller was third. Jeff Smith won in Crate Late Model, Booger Brooks won both A-Hobby races, brother Dallas Brooks won in B-Hobby and Koty Campbell won in Pony/FWD.

Softball

• The Lady Moc RBI Club will meet tonight at 6:30 in the Jim Frost Stadium pressbox, and the public is invited. UTC softball coach Frank Reed will introduce his team's new players, and plans will be discussed for two exhibition-season events next month: the club's two-day Fall Classic and the UTC Blue-Gold game.
