Ousted Sharrock qualifies for re-election

Charles Sharrock, ousted from the Fort Oglethorpe City Council in November 2012 after complaints of sexual harassment by city employees, filled out paperwork Wednesday to seek the seat again in November.

"I have lived in this county all my life and been in the city for 45 years and I haven't done anything wrong," Sharrock said. "I have not done anything illegal and I have not said anything out of the way to no individual that works at this city, or City Hall."

The Catoosa County Superior Court didn't see it that way. The court supported the City Council's unanimous vote to remove Sharrock from his seat, though he continued to draw his $8,500 annual salary and benefits during a series of appeals that ended in April when his removal was upheld.

Three female employees complained that Sharrock squeezed, kissed, and harassed them.

The first complaint was made in 2008 and a second one followed in 2009.

In October of 2012 a third complaint was filed by Detective Tammy Davis, who said he treated her inappropriately. She previously told the Times Free Press that she was disgusted by his actions and that he made an intimidating move.

"I didn't do anything and am the one that knows that [the allegations] are not true," Sharrock said Wednesday.

Sharrock said the allegations were the result of "dirty politics and job security."

"City Council got mad that I wouldn't go along with their dirty system so they found a way to get me out of politics," Sharrock said.

Sharrock said he is running again because he believes he is the best fit man to fill the role, and he said he has a lot of community support.

Sharrock will be on the ballot against Derek Rogers, who was appointed in April to the vacant seat.

Rogers said Wednesday he had heard rumors that Sharrock might run again, and that he was not surprised Wednesday when he also qualified for the upcoming election.

"I have enjoyed my time in office and we have a lot of good things going on in the city and we need to continue moving forward," Rogers said.

"No matter who put their name in the hat I would be focused on doing good things for the city."
