Former Ridgeland High School and Chattanooga State standout Jeremy Brotherton was promoted last week to interim head baseball coach at Georgia Perimeter College, after Brett Campbell took a scouting job with the Texas Rangers. The two were roommates at Georgia and Kennesaw State in their college years, with stints at different two-year schools in between, and Brotherton rejoined Campbell at GPC's Covington, Ga., campus after Campbell went from pitching coach to head coach in 2012. The former major league pitcher was the GCAA champion and coach of the year in both 2013 and 2014, and the Jaguars went 44-14 last season. Brotherton, 32, follows in the footsteps of his father, who was a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga State head coach. Bob Brotherton now is an assistant principal at North Whitfield Middle School but still coaches with PROformance Sports Academy. The Brothertons worked together in the summers of 2007 and 2008 with a Shenandoah Valley collegiate league team that went to the playoffs both years, after Jeremy ended his playing career in the independent Frontier League. He batted over .400 and set a school record with 50 walks in his all-conference season at Chattanooga State, and he hit .379 with 23 doubles as a Kennesaw State senior. "I learned so much from Brett. He's one of the best baseball-minded guys I've ever been around," the younger Brotherton said. "But I grew up in a college dugout and saw to handle things, and I want my players to be the tough kind of player that my dad instilled in me." Said his father: "Jeremy's grown up in that environment and he loves it. He's got a good club and he's in a great, great situation. I just told him to take it and run with it."
