UTC women finish sixth in Louisville event - and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team finished sixth out of 16 teams Monday in Louisville's Cardinal Cup tournament at Simpsonville, Ky. Louisville won with an 888 for three rounds, and Memphis was second at 894. First-day leader Middle Tennessee State slipped to fifth at 904 with a 320 Monday, and UTC followed at 912 with a closing 308. Walker Valley High School graduate Avery George had a first-round 69 and led MTSU at 222, tying for seventh individually. UTC's Emily McLennan was 13th at 225, and Isabella Loza and Agathe Sauzon also made the top 30 at 229 and 230, while Sarah Dolmovich shot 233.

• Including Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High School, reigning NAIA golf champion Coastal Georgia had five players in the top 15 in winning its 14-team invitational tournament at the Sea Island Club's Retreat course Monday and Tuesday, and Dalton State's Sean Elliott was the medalist at 139 with a second-round 66. Cornelius tied for 10th at 146. Austin Hughes tied for 24th with a 151 for fifth-place DSC. Georgia Northwestern was 10th. The Dalton State women were second out of 11 teams in Coastal's Jekyll Island tourney, with a 629 to 604 for Northwood (Fla.). The Lady Roadrunners' Julia McQuilken was third individually at 149.

• The Georgia Public Links Championship was played Saturday and Sunday at Nob North, and Chris Waters of Atlanta won by two strokes with a 140 (71-69). Dalton's Danny Baggett tied for third at 1 45, and another Dalton resident, Robert Smith, shared 10th place with Hiawassee's Wayne Sutton and two others at 150. Rocky Face's Kevin Chastain and Dalton's Eric Sharp tied for 17th in the championship flight at 152. Tunnel Hill's Tony Clayton, Rocky Face's William Williams and Dalton's Tim Harrison Jr. were first through third in Flight 2 at 166, 169 and 170.

Soccer

• Lee University junior goalkeeper Tom Halsall was the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I men's soccer defensive player of the week after making 20 saves in three matches. He had 11 in a 3-1 win over Palm Beach Atlantic.

• Locally based Premier Soccer Academy under-17 and -14 boys coached by Pedro Kozak won tournament titles this past weekend in Knoxville. The PSA Rockets won the under-18 Red Division with a 4-0 record and a 15-0 scoring margin against the 98 Greeneville Galaxy, Nashville FC 98, Chivas (from Lakeway SC) and FC Alliance 98B TSL2. The PSA River Plate boys outscored their four foes 30-1, including a 6-1 margin against FC Alliance 01B and a 12-0 defeat of the Nashville FC Generals. River Plate won 5-0 over Chattanooga FC Academy, which went 2-2.

Running

• In Dalton State's second year of sports as a four-year school and its first as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference, junior Spencer Head became its first athlete of the week. He received the men's cross country honor for his fifth-place finish in the Georgia College meet loaded with NCAA Division II teams last Friday. The Roadrunners finished second to Columbus State.

• The USTFCCCA has both UTC cross country teams listed 13th in the NCAA South Region rankings in the first polls of the regular season. The UTC women were 12th in the preseason poll, and the men were 14th. Southern Conference rival Furman is seventh in the women's rankings, 12th in the men's.

Baseball

• Even using wood bats while their opponents used metal "sticks," the Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team went 3-1 last weekend at the Samford University Fall Invitational in Birmingham. The Cyclones (10-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Memphis Batters Box 7-6, as Hunter Mercer had both the winning hit and the pitching win in relief. Hunter Oliver had three hits and scored a run, and Cade Evans had two hits and two RBIs. Nic Gaddis got the pitching win and tripled, doubled and drove in three runs in a 9-1 defeat of Central Alabama Baseball, while Corey Edgemon, Oliver and Mercer each had two hits. In a 10-1 whipping of the Alabama Elite, Alex Barbee was the winning pitcher, Mercer had a two-run double, Gaddis doubled and scored twice and Cole Vaughn and Noah Hill had two hits apiece. The Cyclones' loss was to the North Alabama Vipers.
