Volleyball Mocs host second tournament and other news from areas around Chattanooga

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team this weekend hosts its second 2014 tournament presented by Hampton Inn & Suites at Maclellan Gymnasium. The one today and Saturday is the Scenic City Showdown and includes UT-Martin, Stetson and South Carolina State. UTC has won four of its last five matches, including two in the Chattanooga Classic last weekend, and has improved to 5-7. UTM is 5-6, Stetson is 5-4 and S.C. State is 0-11. UTM and S.C. State square off in the tournament opener at 3 p.m., followed by Stetson's Hatters against the host Mocs at 6. UTC plays S.C. State at 12:30 p.m. and UTM at 7 on Saturday.

Tennis

• The Southern Junior Cup tennis tournament begins at 8 this morning at the Champions Club and Baylor School, with boys and girls in the 14, 16 and 18 age groups representing nine states. Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi players will be at Baylor today, with the other six states at Champions. Doubles and singles play today will determine who's playing in the gold, silver and bronze divisions in singles play Saturday and doubles Sunday morning. The 12s were here last weekend.

Golf

• Former Soddy-Daisy High School golfer Jessica Cathey was named the Austin Peay student-athlete of the week for competition of Sept. 8-14. Cathey placed sixth in the Weaver-Murray State Invitational by shooting a 225 (76-74-75).

Basketball

• The first Southeast Tennessee Basketball Coaches Clinic still has openings Saturday at Hixson High School. Sessions will run from 8:15 a.m. till 5:45 p.m. Among the headliners will be UTC coaches Jim Foster and Will Wade. Foster, a 2013 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who has guided 27 teams to NCAA national tournaments, will conduct a session on attacking zone defenses. Wade, the Southern Conference men's coach of the year last year in his first season at UTC, will teach the principles of his "Chaos" defense. Other instructors include Rick Torbett, president of Better Basketball, and Tim Rice, a former NCAA coach and president of BasketballMentoring.com. Lee University coaches Marty Rowe and Tommy Brown also will teach sessions. "Usually you have to go to Nashville, Knoxville or Atlanta for a clinic like this, and it can take up your whole weekend," said Hixson girls' coach Matthew Smith, the clinic's organizer. High school, middle school and youth coaches are invited. Cost is $55, including a light breakfast and lunch.
