Volleyball Mocs go 2-1 in Scenic City Showdown

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team wound up 2-1 in its Scenic City Showdown presented by Hampton Inn & Suites with a 3-0 win over South Carolina State and a 3-0 loss to UT-Martin on Saturday.

UT-Martin and Stetson also each went 2-1, the latter rebounding from Friday's loss to UTC to edge UTM 3-2 and down S.C. State 3-0. UTM won the sets-won tiebreaker for the title with the host Mocs second.

Against S.C. State (0-14), Julimar Alvarado had 11 kills and Sarah Batterton and Lauren Gainer had 10 apiece for the Mocs (7-8), while Lauren Greenspoon and Anne Bachmann had 16 and 15 assists, Catherine Chason made 19 digs and Kristy Wieser had 12 digs and four aces.

Allie Davenport had 13 kills and three aces and Wieser was next with eight kills against UT-Martin (7-7), while Bachmann and Greenspoon had 22 and 16 assists and Chason had 12 digs. The Skyhawks' Emily Keaton had 15 kills and Madison Bergren had 38 assists in the 25-22, 25-20, 32-30 match.

Bergren was the tournament most valuable player and Keaton and Allie Whimpey joined her on the all-tournament team, which also included UTC's Davenport and Gainer, Stetson's McKenna Foster and SCSU's Kirby Anderson.

• At Livingston, Ala., Latrice Johnson had 11 kills and Patty Orozco and Erin Hill added 10 apiece in Lee's 3-1 Gulf South Conference loss to West Alabama. The set scores were 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21. Hill and Sadie Johnson had 13 and 12 assists and Hill and Johnson served three aces apiece for the Lady Flames (2-4, 2-3), while Sarah Davis had 15 digs and Stephanie Hernandez added 11.

• At Atlanta, Covenant lost 3-2 to 11-0 Millsaps but beat host Oglethorpe 3-0 with Chelsea VanDyk and Christina Argaez nailing eight kills apiece, Chloe Carlson making 16 digs and Schuyler Moore setting 17 assists. The Stormy Petrels (8-6) fell 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. In the 25-16, 23-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-6 loss for the Lady Scots (10-6), Ginny Moore had 12 kills and 20 digs, VanDyk had 10 kills, Chloe Carlson had 21 digs and Schuyler Moore and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 18 and 14 assists and 15 and 14 digs.

• At Montreat, N.C., Bryan College won 3-1 over Montreat in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, rising to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the league with the 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18 victory. Tennessee Wesleyan, meanwhile, won 3-0 at home against Truett-McConnell and is now 4-7, 2-1 in the AAC.

• At Sewanee, Tenn., Sewanee defeated visiting Rhodes 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) in a Southern Athletic Association match with Diamond Stewart posting 14 kills, Jamie Sue Wilson adding 11 and Rachel Schuman and Walker Buxton setting 13 and 12 assists. Sara Jayne Sutton and Buxton had 14 and 11 digs for the Tigers (4-7, 1-1).

• At Mobile, Ala., Dalton State fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) in the Southern States Athletic Conference match despite Anna Metzler's eight kills and 11 digs and 11 digs also by Karly Newman. Mobile is 13-1; DSC is 5-5, 1-4.

• At Salisbury, N.C., Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 13 kills with a .478 attack percentage and four aces in Carson-Newman's 3-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Catawba. Kristen Pickett from Cleveland had 30 assists as the Lady Eagles (7-3, 3-0) won 25-21, 25-13, 25-11.
