Tahoe athletes can apply for Ironman Chattanooga

Following the cancellation of the Ironman Lake Tahoe 70.3 and 140.6 triathlons that had been scheduled for Sept. 22, an email posted on Facebook indicates that 100 more spots in this weekend's Ironman Chattanooga will be made available to athletes who had registered for the Lake Tahoe event.

Ironman Lake Tahoe was canceled because of unsafe air quality in the region. Smoke from the King Fire wildfire caused smoke to descend into the Tahoe Basin, resulting in high levels of particulate matter in the air, according to the Ironman website. Ironman officials decided these conditions would be unsafe and canceled both races.

According to an email posted on a Facebook group page for the Chattanooga Ironman, the World Triathlon Corporation will open 100 more spots for the Chattanooga race beginning at noon Tuesday on a first-come, first-served basis. Tahoe registrants who acquire one of these spots will be charged $100 to be added to the Chattanooga event.

Athletes registered for Ironman Lake Tahoe have also been offered limited additional spots at other Ironman events this year, a spot in the 2015 Ironman Lake Tahoe for $100 or a 50 percent discount on entry into one of eight other 2015 Ironman events, but the 2015 Ironman Chattanooga is not included on that list.
