48 facing charges in gambling bust at local VFW

Forty-eight people were issued citations for participating in an illegal poker game that took place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4848 located at 1491 Riverside Drive.

More than a dozen people have "turned themselves in," and many more will follow, police officials said.

The illegal game took place on Aug. 22, when members of the Special Investigations Unit, Crime Suppression Unit and ABC served a search warrant at the VFW location, and according to the police affidavits, "a large poker game was found to be in progress at the time of the search warrant."

According to Tennessee Law, gambling is "risking anything of value for a profit whose return is to any degree contingent on chance."

If a person makes money from gambling it is considered illegal in Tennessee. A person can play poker, but not for money, goods, or services. If someone is not paying to play but simply eligible for prizes, they're within the law.
