Jesse Register calls for swift shake-up at struggling schools

Metro Director of Schools Jesse Register said some low-performing public schools may need to be closed as he called Tuesday for swift action that would have all parents in parts of East Nashville pick the schools their children attend.

It marks one of the most sweeping rounds of proposals for Metro's public schools in years, and Register said there is no time to waste.

The plan, which Register unveiled to the Metro school board Tuesday, hinges on the notion of "school choice" and buy-in from leaders of Nashville's publicly financed, privately led charter schools - a collaboration he called a "third way."

Register, who singled out the successes of existing charters here, wants to turn East Nashville - the Stratford and Maplewood high school clusters - into an "all-choice, no-default zone." This means all parents there would rank which schools they covet, whether that is charter, magnet or traditional. A lottery probably would determine matches.
