Chattanooga Market welcomes Scouts

The Chattanooga Market welcomes 150 Scout troops to the market this Sunday in celebration of the Cherokee Area Council Boy Scouts of America's 100th birthday.

Visitors are encouraged to not only learn about the Scouts' projects but to enjoy the activities they will bring with them: pinewood derby races, bike rodeo, welding exhibit, Dutch oven cooking exhibition and demonstrations, pioneering projects that include a catapult and bridge, rope and candle making, soapbox derby, Ferris wheel and 30 interactive exhibits.

"Our initiative for this event is to engage those interested in the Boy Scouts of America in a new and exciting way," says Natalie McMasters, Cherokee Area Council field director, in a news release. "We are thrilled to show everyone what Scouting is doing in our community. We hope this event will spark fond memories in former Scouts and alumni and intrigue those who may be interested in learning more about our organization."

The Cherokee Area Council serves 11 counties in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia. More than 5,000 boys and young men between the ages ages of 7 and 20 are members. In 2013, these young men and Scout volunteers provided more than 112,500 service hours to the communities in the council's areas.

Each Sunday, the market is buzzing with activities ranging from vendors selling fresh garden produce, meats, cheeses, breads, eggs and other home-produced goods, as well as a huge variety of arts and crafts, fashions and jewelry.
