First haunted houses emerge this weekend

Some spooks will get an early start on their Halloween hi-jinks. At least two haunted attractions are opening this weekend, and several more will follow in October.

Here's what's out there now.

HAUNTED CAVERN

• Where: Ruby Falls, 1720 S. Scenic Highway.

• When: Friday-Saturday, Sept. 27, then Friday-Sunday, Oct. 3-Nov. 1, plus Thursday Oct. 9. Freak Parade starts at 7:30 nightly.

• What to expect: A journey into the cavern to learn about "The Dark Legacy of Elder Shaw," the story of a peddler whose "legacy tonic" turned the people of mining town Carrion Ridge into mindless fiends.

• Admission: $23 Fridays, $25 Saturdays, $21 Sundays (cheaper tickets online; group discounts first two weekends and Sundays).

THE HAUNTED HILLTOP

•Where: 8235 Highway 58.

• When: 7 p.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27; then 7 p.m. until at least 1 a.m. every Friday and Saturday in October and Nov. 1.

• What to expect: Haunted house, dark maze, haunted hayride, bonfire, cemetery, vortex tunnel, animatronics, scary movies on the big screen.

• Admission: $20 (cash only at the door, or pay online and bring printed receipt).
